It looks like you need a professional repair. If you're really lucky this may just be a break in the flex, or the switch has failed - both relatively cheap and simple to sort out. More likely, though, is a problem with the motor (carbon brushes worn out perhaps) - bound to be more expensive, if only because there's more labour involved.
Sorry not to be able to offer a quick fix!
SOURCE: I have the same problem as steve967 The dyson
Dear Michael_Stad,
I am going to sound like a broken record but here is my same answer to another person with the same problem.
I have I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few
seconds at a time with each trigger pull. My husband called Dyson
(Canada) and without hassle they shipped us a replacement part which I
just received this morning. The replacement part sent to us is: DC16
Main Body with Rating Plate. It is also under warranty for 1 year. The
great customer service makes up for the flaw in the machine. Also,
Dyson is aware of the problem. Hope this helps.

its the ball cradle assembly. There is a little clip that changes the direction of the suction. that clip breaks all the time and causes the internal direction valve to stay in one position. unfortunately dyson doesnt sell these parts separate, you will have to purchase a new cradle assy. let me know if you need a part #

Hi there,
I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. Like most Dyson cleaners, your DC14 is equipped with a safety device which shuts off the cleaner if it starts to overheat. This is often due to a blockage - I'd also recommend washing the filter. The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online guide:
http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/help.asp?article=626&product=DC14-ANIMAL
The correct way to wash the filter is shown in the video linked below. The filter should be washed in cold water without any detergent, at least once every 3-6 months. Always ensure it's totally dry before replacing it - this may take up to 12 hours.

By clearing any obstructions and washing the filter, you should be able to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've followed these steps and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you and recommend the best course of action.
Kind regards,
Jack
