SOURCE: How do you replace a drive belt on a husqvarna cz4817
i just replaced my belt on a cz 4817. On one side there should be a bar with a spring on it. If you sitting in it it will be on you left side mounted on the deck itself. Push the bar in for about an inch and then up over the lip thats the belt tension spring. you should now be able to remove your old and put the new on. My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem.
I looked up your mower and I believe you should be using drive belt# 5321701-40. That is a 112" belt. Here is a link to the parts manual and a drawing of the belt routing. As long as that is the belt you have, and replaced it correctly it should be fine. You are correct, when you put the mower in gear, the pulley system will put more tension on it.
