There is a rectangular black box across the screen - it goes away when I use the favorite button and have multi screens showing - it returns when I close out the favorites. Color, sound, picture quality are all fine. Just can't get rid of this black box.

In the customer menu--find the closed caption settings---you will most likely find the set has been set to TEXT 1---with the remote select either CC1 or OFF---the black box was for text (books) and was not ever used much---usually someone engages it by accident

A black rectangular black screen shows up but..... sony trinitron

Check the set up. You may have closed captioning turned on which will show up as a black box if there is no closed captioning information for the selected channel. If that fails to resolve the problem, update this.

Thanks,

Unwanted rectangular black area appears on screen blocking 40% of picture

This could be the result of a partly shorted vertical winding on the deflection yoak.Since the line is on an angle and not straight across.

Big black box on screen

It has something to do with the closed captioning. He must have hit the closed caption button on your remote. You need to either turn the closed caption off or make another selection under closed captioning like cc1 cc2. Just keep making selections until the box goes away.
