SOURCE: SIM Card Register
As it has a SIM Card already it is most likely a GSM phone. Only T-Mobile and AT &T run GSM systems in USA. If it's a Post paid account then you would need to get your friend to transfer the account to you.
Normally GSM phones purchased direct from AT&T or T-Mobile will be locked to their system, ie: so you can only use a AT&T SIM in an AT&T phone and a T-Mobile SIM in a T-Mobile phone. But a way around that is that you can go on line and get the Phone "unlocked" for about $25, then you can put in a SIM from any GSM system US and Worldwide and it will work 99.99% of the time.
Probably easier to open a POST PAID account and they will give you a new number & SIM. Advantage is lots of minutes included every month, but need to sign up for a year and need a credit check.
Or if you want to use pay as you go/ PREPAID account instead just go along to any AT&T store and just buy a SIM, you will get a new number.. Advantage is its simple, no contract or credit check its "pay as you go" so you cannot run up a expensive bill. Downside is you pay per minute and if you talk a lot that can end up costing a lot more than certain monthly plans. if you don't ad money to the account after a certian amount of time the minute can be lost, and eventually the SIM will become disabled. New SIM then its a new telephone number.

SOURCE: cannot download courses to garmin
Had same problem. It's a software download problem that can't be solved online. Tech support said they would immediately send me a new unit with software preloaded. When it arrives (talked with them just 24 hrs ago) I am to call them back so the account can be transferred to new unit. I then send the old one back to them. Hope it works out OK.
SOURCE: Trying to register used handsets
There are a couple of things that may be the problem with this. First, are you sure that the handsets are compatable with the base you are trying to register them to? Second, how many handsets are currently registered to the base unit? You may be trying to register more handsets than the base can handle. and lastly, try doind the de-registration of the handset this way, press and hold the "End" key, while pressing the "End" key, also press the "#" key. The lcd should show two options, select "Base Unavailible" and confirm. The LCD on the handset should then say to place it in the base to register it. If that doesn't work, post with the results of trying the above steps and I will try to help you further.
