I have an Insignia DVD/VCR recorder combo. The VCR works fine. The DVD player/recorder door won't open. Whenever I turn on the unit, the DVD scans and gives the error message, "Unknown Disc. Check Disc Again." There is no disc in the DVD.
Disc inserted will stop on screen. Started by stopping occasionally, now won't start at all. NS-DVD1

Combo units have this essential flaw--if one half fails you are usually done especially if the DVD side fails.
If Door does not open either a disc is jammed inside the mechanism or the mechanism is out of alignment or damaged.
Good argument against buying these units--DVD individual parts are rarely sold--only (if available) would be the entire DVD unit itself--not cost effective to repair.
DVD players are now real cheap (see some for as little as $20) so if not a simple jammed disc or something like that buy a DVD player.
General
Problems Player won’t work (locks up) •
Try unplugging the AC power cord and plugging it back in. •
Reset the DVD/VCR: on the front of the unit, press and hold the STANDBY/ON
button while you press and hold the STOP button—wait at least 3 seconds before
you release both of the buttons. You’ll need to set up your menu preferences
because this Reset Procedure returns the DVD/VCR’s menus to the factory default settings and also erases the
contents of the Disc Library.
I imagine you have checked the disk for scratches top and bottom, if so you can purchase a cd/dvd lens cleaner cdrom as the laser may need realigning and cleaning.
Your unit has it seems to have developed a video problem. it could be in the video switching IC or the video processor. Its going to need a trained technician, who knows how to use an ocilliscope to find the video problem.. Good Luck
