SOURCE: How can I "Keep Alive" the video out put to an

If you have Windows 7, click the start button and select Control Panel, then select "power options". In the left margin select "change when the computer sleeps". In the next box select "change advanced power settings". In the advanced power options box look for "power button and lid" and click the plus box next to it and change your settings. Make sure to click "apply" after changing the settings or it won't take.

Xp and Vista will be similar. In all cases you want to go into Control Panel and select power options.

SOURCE: I want to use a external monitor keyboard mouse and close the lid and keep working on the computer

There is a setting somewhere in control panel that should be set to... when lid is closed..."do nothing".
This should be in the power settings. The other options are "shut down", "sleep" or "hibernate".

I want to use a external monitor keyboard mouse and close the lid and keep working on the computer

I'm not sure if you'll be able to close the lid because you might need a laptop that is designed to work with a docking station to do that.

Anyway, you can hook an external monitor, usb keyboard, and usb mouse to the laptop and continue working as usual.

Windows won't start at bootup. Instead the fan turns on.

It sounds like your operating system has failed. Your best bet would be to use a working computer to burn a new install disc / backup disc / repair disc and then reinstall your operating system, or if possible repair it.
Have you tried plugging the VGA output into an external monitor and turning it on? Maybe your screen has just failed, if it does output to an external monitor.
You can get it into external mode if you boot it up with an external monitor connected, a USB mouse connected, and a USB keyboard. Boot up the machine (plugged in!) and close the lid right away, and it should automatically kick over. If not, try windows key and P at the same time, once the machine is "running"

I have a Dell Vostro and would like to lock the laptop and use a monitor and wireless keyboard whilst at home. Can you tell me if and how I can do this?

This is assuming you are using Windows 7. (Since you didn't specify. -_-)
Software lock at same time = No. Hardware lock at same time = Yes.
When you have the keyboard connect and the laptop plugged into the monitor, go to your Windows Mobility Center. Go to "Power Options. Look for "What to do when you close the lid." and tell it to do "Nothing".
Then close your laptop and lock it.
Viola.

Can i close my laptop while using other mouse and keyboard

I am assuming you mean the laptop screen, not power off. The other mouse and keyboard is an external mouse and keyboard connected to your laptop. either way .. the answer is use.
Just keep in mind what your settings our when you do close the screen lid as this will either place the computer into sleep mode or power off.

While at home I plug a wide screen monitor into my Dell studio 1737 Laptop. As long as I keep my lid open the icons and print on my monitor are the right size. When I close the lid, icons and prints get...

You appear to be cloning your internal LCD and as long as it is active, the resolution setting for the LCD is also controlling the resolution of the external monitor. When the LCD is closed, then the default resolution of the external monitor is being used by Windows 7 (It apparently has autodetected the size of the monitor and knows the Highest optimal resolution it will display.) The higher the resolution, then smaller the icons.
To resolve, go to display properties and check the resolution of the internal LCD and then set the External display to the lower resolution.
You should be able to wake the system with an external keyboard, by pressing the spacebar, if the system is sleeping

Hi,

It is not that much practically easy to remove the damaged screen including the lid. Instead, you can get an external mouse and keyboard, connect it your laptop and can use them while keeping your laptop lid closed. For this you need to hook up your external display and in the control panel -> power options, by default the settings will be there to put your computer into sleep mode when the lid is closed. You have to change this option such that when lid is closed nothing should be done.

I hope the provided solution is useful to you.
Thanks

How to block VGA port on my laptop

in most cases, you can switch between display modes by using the function keys. the keys from F1 to F12 on your keyboard should contain various symbols (sometimes in blue). one of those symbols looks like the front of a monitor (on some laptops it says "LCD/CRT"). look for the key with the monitor symbol (or the text "LCD/CRT"), press and hold the Fn-key on the bottom line of your keyboard and then press the display mode function key. then you will see if the image on your display switch from one screen to the other.
if you cannot find such a key, you can disable the external display by right-clicking your desktop and choosing properties from the drop-down menu. on the "settings"-tab you should be able to see two virtual displays. click on display 2 and then uncheck the box that says "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor".

I want to connect a Ultrasharp 1907 FPt monitor to my Dell inspiron. I have a power cable and also one from monitor to lappy, do I need a driver?

Hi,
to toggle the screen between your laptop and the dell 19" monitor. Hold down the Fn key on the laptop and tap the F8 key. The screen would move to the external display.

There are three settings that can be done by the Fn + F8 key combination
1. Both the laptop and external monitor works
2. Only the external monitor would work
3. Only the laptop screen works

Thanks
