SOURCE: Trying to replace 3 speed ceiling fan switch

Hello,

The black goes to the L connection the others are a guess. You can do this two ways. Connect the colored wires in any sequence and then see what switch sequence give you high and lowest, the other one will be medium. Once you determine that, mark the wires with a piece of masking tape as high, medium and low. Otherwise you connect them, turn power on and use a multimeter to see which color gives you the highest voltage and which gives you lowest. Since you aren't comfortable using live wires and a meter, go with the first option and use the process of elimination to find the wires giving you the speeds you need to find the highest and lowest. Next, you need to determine how your switch sequence works. First pull has to give you highest speed. so you may end up wiring them in reverse if your first attempt is backwards. There is a reason the first pull needs to be highest, it powers up the motor so you can then chose a lower setting. A low setting first will over tax your motor and wear it out eventually as it has to work harder at first.

Let me know if you need further clarification and perhaps this is all you need to get fixed.

Regards,
Worldvet
ps I checked on the Internet of a wiring diagram and I bet you did tok all to no avail.

SOURCE: Wiring the replacement 3 speed switch (fan motor)

I called King of Fans and the rep that I spoke with gave me the correct wiring for the 3 speed switch:

L White
1 Yellow
2 Blue
3 Black

The problem is that after I wired it this way I am getting the same result (off on 3 settings and a motor hum on 1 setting). So, either the Westinghouse switch that I bought at Home Depot is not compatible or it is the capacitor. The saga continues.

I got my craftmade ceiling fan about 10 years ago, the fan has now stopped working but the light works, I changed out the switch on the wall that was not the problem sometimes I will turn on the wall...

pretty sure its the 3 speed pull chain switch.$4.50 to $6.00 at home depot or lowes or hardware/elecrtical store.
how 2 replace switch.
1.turn off breaker to fan/fan lights, probably that whole room.
may need extension cord & floor lamp from closest room with electric, so u can see.
2.need 6ft step ladder to get up to fan.look see how to get to fan speed switch. speed switch unscrews from outside but body of switch is inside fan cover.
3. need to take fan off ceiling to replace switch.
4.switch has 4 wires, power feed into switch and 3 selector
wires that go to high speed winding, medium speed winding and low speed winding.
speed selector switch has 4 settings, off, low, medium, high.

about ac circuits , black wire is 120 volts, hot.
white wires are neutral return wire. an ac voltmeter will read 120volts ac with its red and black probes between black, hot and
white,neutral.
white= neutal=ground which is green. If wired properly and polarity was observed, white and green ground wires both connect to the neutral ground buss bar in the circuit breaker panel box and are the same electrical point.

black wires, and the selector handle getting the hot juice into the fan and white returns the used juice to the circuit breaker panel box.
If polarity was observed, you can touch white and ground without getting a shock.
black will jolt or even fry you dead, so make sure the breaker to the fan is off, so that the circuit is de-energized before you touch it.

PLEASE NOTE--- make drawing on paper of what color wires from the fan motor go to what color wires on the selector switch.
If the switch has 4 black wires, you need to put different color electrical tape as a marker, on each wire. or ,to be cheap, you can use white paper, scissors to cut paper, and pencil and write 1,2,3,4 on the paper and tape to the 4 switch wires.

that is: wire # 1 from the switch goes to the black wire from the wall--ac hot
wire #2 from switch goes to yellow fan motor winding,
wire # 3 from switch goes to orange wire from fan motor

wires are specific and NOT interchangeable.

Replacing a pull switch on an Encon fan. 4 wires. Didn't label wires before I pulled them out. Number on old switch is 1282M and 17292101 with A B C D labels. Can you tell me which wires go where? ...

I have just figured out the wiring to my Encon 5TD42WHC ceiling fan. (This is not to say your fan won't be different.) You can't use just any switch; the switches vary in operation. See the images attached. Good luck, and be careful working with AC voltages.

Wiring diagram for a 3 way ceiling pull switch.

These fans are manufactured by a number of overseas companies and sold exclusively by Home Depot. They do not have a standard color code for the fan switch. What you can do is turn off the power, keep the white neutral connected. Then using the black power wire fro the ceiling, take one of the switch wires and connect to that black, turn the power on and observe the speed .. low mark it 1, medium mark it 2, high mark it 3. Repeat untill you have identified all the speed wires. Then connect these wires to the 1,2,3, terminations of your new switch

ok. hope this helps, use a switch from FANTEC. it'll be called a 3 speed fan switch. CAM #5 No. 21105. this will also say Single Layer 3 or 4 wire application SPLIT continuity function.. THE SPLIT PART IS VITAL. now when wire it. the BLACK wire goes in SLOT 3. ORANGE wire goes in L. PURPLE wire goes in slot 2, ORANGE wire goes in slot 1. IF, and i repeat IF this does not work for you ensure you have a SPLIT CONTINUITY FUNCTION switch. NO MATTER WHAT the BLACK wire WILL go into slot 3. the ORANGE wire WILL go in slot L. switch the orange and purple wires only. ENSURE POWER IS OFF WHEN CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING WIRES. YOU WILL GET THE SNOT ZAPPED OUTTA YOU IF YOU DON'T. please post if this helps.
