Depending on machine, and if machine has a brake, the emergency brake being on makes it so much easier. Remove belt from pulley on engine end of mower first. (If the belt snapped, and your unable to see how it was routed check your manual, or google the make model you have) if belt is just worn you will have to squeeze the belt through the guides at every pulley. Once your at the rear of the mower there will most likely be a fan ontop of pulley, you must work the belt around the fan trying to not damage the fans fins. Can be tough sometimes. When you install the new one start from the rear of mower and work your way to front, one pulley at a time. Might be easier to wrap belt around pullies at this point w E brake off. (E brake on releases tension on belt, when it is off tension is on belt) make sure the belt is in the pulley on the correct side of the guides, and routed correctly. Also some mowers require you to drop the pulley under the engine. When and if need be, the easiest way is to pull a spark plug and fill the cylinder w a piece of clothesline rope so the piston will be forced to stop . This prevents pulley from spinning while trying to remove it. After pulley is dropped, put drive belt in top pulley and install setup back in place, bolt on, remove rope, install plug. BOOM doin wheelies in no time. Best of luck hope this helps although all machines can be different this is prob most common . (Non-electric pto)

SOURCE: Hi, Just replaced the drive belt on a Husqvarna
Hello,
My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem.
I looked up your mower and I believe you should be using drive belt# 5321701-40. That is a 112" belt. Here is a link to the parts manual and a drawing of the belt routing. As long as that is the belt you have, and replaced it correctly it should be fine. You are correct, when you put the mower in gear, the pulley system will put more tension on it.
