If the washer agitates, but does not spin and empty, it is most likely the switch that is activated by closing the lid. Those Kenmores from that time had a problem with the bracket cracking on that switch and then it would come loose and could not be activated. If it will not agitate, spin or empty, it is most likely the clutch, which kind of looks like a hockey puck with six holes in it. If you’re handy at all it is about a $20 part, and about 1/2 hour of work.

This is usually a sign that the lid switch/lock is not working and needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: Kenmore 400 washer on warm cycle begins to fill

When the water turns cold, check the other hot water outlets in the house. Possibly the water heater is simply running out of hot water.

If that's not it, I'd have the repairman replace the water valve and while he's got the hoses off, check to be sure the filter screens are not stopped up. There's really not much to the water temp control so there's not much else I can think of that might cause this problem.

SOURCE: my kenmore 400 washer fills but nothing else

Lid switch is still most likely the problem. Are you able to unplug washer from wall and check the wire connected to the switch.

SOURCE: Kenmore washer 90 series continue

Sounds like the fill switch needs to be replaced. A good way to test it is to set your machine on low fill and see if it fills past 3/4. If it does, it's the fill switch.

My Kenmore 400 washer won't fill w/water. I can fill by hand n it washes fine!?!

It sounds like the water vale is gone bad. The valve or some call it a switch is what lets the hot or cold water into the washer Good Luck Mike L.

Kenmore series 80 model 110 wont stop filling!

There is a clear plastic hose that runs from the load selection switch to the side of the washer drum. This hose connects the fill sensor to the load switch. without it being in good condition and connected properly the washer won,t get a signal that it's full.

My kenmore 29822800 won't fill with water, it works on spin and drain

The last time I moved, my washer/dryer combo (Frigidaire) had the same issue for approximately 7 months before finding out all I needed to do was level the washer, and of course, make sure the faucet connected to the washer is turned to on position. Hope this is helpful.

Kenmore washer 80 series stopped draining

So it will agitate and fill but the motor won't run during drain and spin?
If so, the likely cause is a bad lid switch. The paddle that the probe hits when the lid is down moves a small switch. That switch can do two things
1. fail internally. It will look fine outside but it won't close the circuit
2. the screw holes snap and it hangs off the wires, the probe no longer hits the paddle and the switch stays open.
The lid switch is cheap and very easy to repair.
