Likely a bad card sensor. Check with your Zebra dealer for possible warranty coverage (if less than 2-years old or you have the optional Zebra OneCare plan), of other service options. It could mean that the ribbon sensor on the printer is broken. Sounds like you need to send back to zebra for repair. This is free if printer is still under warranty. check out zebra's website for info on how to return printers for service.

There is a little slider on the side of the card. Push it down towards the golden contacts. This will un-protect the card.
