SOURCE: tray output

You should configure TRAY 1 as Legal only.
and Tray 2 as plain letter.

Specially when you specify from what tray/paper type to print.

This can be easily configured from the Printer Properties within the Printers and Faxes section of the Control Panel.

Good luck!

SOURCE: change tray 1 paper size

You need to adjust the green paper size sensor in the back of the tray to letter. This is connected to sensors on the side of the tray. If you set it directly to Letter, then the printer will read the tray as letter paper.

SOURCE: Cannot change paper size of trays 1 and 2. Tray 1

To disable the operator panel menus so that changes cannot be made to the printer default settings: 1 Turn the printer off. Note: Disabling the operator panel menus does not prevent access to the Job Menu or to Print and Hold functionality. 2 Press and hold Select and Return and turn the printer on. 3 Release the buttons when you see Performing Self Test. Config Menu appears on the first line of the display. 4 Press Menu until you see Panel Menus, and then press Select. Disable appears on the second line of the display. 5 Press Select. Locking Menus appears briefly. 6 Press Menu until you see Exit Config Menus, and then press Select. The menus are disabled. If you press Menu, the message Menus Disabled appears. To enable the menus: 1 Repeat steps 1 through 4. 2 Press Menu until you see Enable. 3 Continue with steps 5 and 6.

Brother 9840 print on legal size paper

it seems that on your model you can only use legal size paper on tray 1 & 2, then you have to set the paper size.
here is a link to instructions for your model.

Load legal message

Hello,
You will need to go into the printer's settings and change the tray 2 paper size back to letter. This printer is an oldie and does not rely on the paper tray to tell it what size paper the tray contains. Another possibility is that If your program is sending a print job (which will over-ride the printers settings) that somehow is set up as legal, then you will need to either abort or cancel the print job on the printer or install a legal size piece of paper into tray #1 (the manual feed tray) and then press GO or CONTINUE on the printer to complete the print job!
Good Luck!

My Lexmark T640 does not seem to recognize paper "tray 2". I want to print legal, but it only prints from tray 1. How can I get the printer to recognize and use tray 2 so I can print legal AND letter?

2 things
1st make sure the paper guides are set correctly on the trays for legal make sure it's exactly on legal or it put the tray into universal mode. (To clarfiy the guides in the back which allow you to put legal in the tray.)
2nd Go into menu and then to paper menu and adjust/ confirm the settings for tray 1 and 2. Based on your question tray 1 is letter and tray 2 is legal, so make sure both of the tray size and type are set correct.

Printing envelopes on the bizhub 252

After spending way too long messing around with this on my bizhub 250 here's what finally allowed me to print:

I simply changed the bypass tray setting from "envelope" to "normal". I kept the custom size the same (9 1/2 X 4 1/8) and it started to print.

Doesn't make sense, but you can give it try.
