SOURCE: transmission not shifting

Sounds like a speedo gear in the transmission ... I think the tahoe one had a speedo cable the speed sensor is located in the speedo ... will cause all those to fail if speedo is not working as did in my Astrovan

SOURCE: transmission wil not shift out of 1st gear and

you need to take this to dealer for repairs, there might be a short in the speed sensor wires that did that to your speedometer, the reason it won't shift is speed sensor, input sensor or output sensor on transmission.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. The first thing you need to do is check your transmission fluid. Make sure it is at the correct level. You may need to change the fluid and change the filter. If you haven't did this, I would advise you to do it. You would be surprised to see the difference, if that is the cause. It is very hard to diagnose a transmission problem because there is no way to find out other then taking it apart. It could be damged teeth, seal, ect. It is possible that you have a bad torque converter. But the only way to know for sure is looking at it or having a mechanic look at it. Now, the transmission should throw a fault code. If your check engine light is on, this may be the reason why. If so, you need to take it to Autozone or Advanced and have the codes read. It may tell what is wrong. If there is no check engine light, it is possible that you may just need a fluid change. I would change the filter and fluid first. Transmission maintenance can be very expensive. Shifting can become hard if there is low fluid or you need a new filter. Pay attention to the housing and see if it is leaking any fluid. This could be a sign of a bad seal. The transmission also has sensors that can fail. If the fluid change doesn't help, your only option is taking it off yourself or haing a mechanic do it for you. This is just one of those things that you need a hands on experience to know the exact cause of your problem.

97 yukon not shifting after 1st

Check the transmission fluid level with the vehicle idling in park. If you do not see fluid on the dipstick then add one half quart at a time until it is in the hash marks on the dip stick. be sure to let the transmission (DexIII or mercon) completely drain down the dipstick tube or you will get a false reading. Shut off engine to avoid having to warm up the transmission to get an accurate reading and possibly causing (more) damage then may already have been done.

I have had vehicles where the speed sensor, MAF, MAP and throttle body did not let them shift as they should but the vehicle did shift. I have put several links above. Just to make sure if you have check engine light find out the code. Make sure you check transmission fluid with engine on and in park, emergency brake on at normal operating temperature. ( May sound bad but I have had to tell people above 30 about this and they said it was the first they heard of it). I will say the thing which stands out to me is check shifter cable. Check fuses. I did see a link which suggested brakes locked up but I assume the truck is not even trying to move.

95 yukon won't shift into first gear.

I don't think its plug wires. When you say it won't shift into 1st? It takes off in 2nd? Does it shift to 3rd and 4th? Or is it a shifter problem? Like it won't go into manual 1st

My 1996 GMC Yukon 4x4 transmission will only drive in 1st and 2nd

It will take off from a stop in overdrive but as soon as it shifts into 3rd at about 30 miles per hour it jumps into neutral? If yes, you have a burnt 3/4 clutch. The transmission will need rebulit. Cost of about 1600 dollars.

The electrical harness between the steering column in these gmc units are troublesome. I just paid $500 (part $300) to have mine changed out on my 97 gmc yukon, but for 335,000 kilometers, no leaks, no oil consumption, not bad
