SOURCE: Compressor Stopping

compressor is running overloaded possible problems bad relay/overload /capacitor dirty or clogged condensers if the unit uses a condenser fan suspect a bad fan. and defective thermostats are notorious for short cycling. id check the coils first and if dirty clean up maybe that can be the major problem.

SOURCE: Fridge not cooling compressor works intermitently

If the compressor starts and runs for a few seconds it could be the relay. Or it could be the compressor itself has failed. When a compressor starts and runs for a short period it is possible that the relay contacts are arced together which would have both the start and run winding in the motor engaged at the same time for more than 3 seconds. This would result in the compressor tripping out on the thermal overload. It depends on what type of relay your compressor has. If it is a thermal relay, unplugging the refrigerator for about 15 minutes would allow the relay to cool off and reset.

SOURCE: RV air conditioner. Compressor running, fan stops before cool

The fan motor is getting hot and going off on the internal overload in the motor.
This is caused by either a low voltage, a bad capacitor, or tight or dry bearings in the motor.
To check the bearings turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade if it spins freely then the bearings are ok.
To check the capacitor you will need some kind of tester or you can buy a capacitor and replace it, that's what a lot of people do. They usually don't cost very much.
To check the voltage you will need a voltmeter and measure the volts at the unit.

I replaced the relay switch on my mini frigdiare model BFPH31M6LM and the fridge still not getting cold. The compressor is humming softly but I'm not hearing it click on and off. Can someone please tell me...

The compressor won't switch off until it either overheats or the fridge cabinet is cold enough for the thermostat to switch it off and if there is a fault preventing it cooling, it is likely to run until doomsday though it is worth mentioning an auto defrost panel if stuck switched on can cause this...

If that is the problem the compressor will be working hard and will become quite hot as will the condenser and one of the compressor pipes.

When power is supplied to the motor it is likely to hum whether it is running or not, though it is a different sort of hum if it isn't running.
If the compressor pipes aren't getting hot/cold and the condenser isn't warm/hot then either the compressor is broken, not running or the refrigerant has escaped.

Fridge appears to be dead. No lighting, no temperature display, silent. When unplugged and plugged back in, everything functions as it should...for a couple minutes! Then it goes silent and dark again

call a technician as it could be a control board problem or a start run capacitor that is over loading the electrical side and throwing the thermal overload switch

How much more efficent is this than my 40 yr old janitrol 125000 btu beast

not knowing what you are replacing it with, it is hard to give a reasonable answer ( old sealed units against split system converter ac units )
However if you work along these lines, you will come to a logical decision
First off the old machines had the compressor operation tied to the thermostat setting so the compressor ran full blast until the room cooled to the set temperature. Then it stopped and remain stopped until the room heated up. At this point the compressor restarted and that is the point the the most power is consumed
again it runs full blast until the room again cools and switches off
So you can see that you have a varying room temperature and high energy consumption on start up
Now compare that to inverter units
The compressor is running all the time ( no high energy start ups every 10 minutes or so) but the compressor becomes less efficient as the room cools down
Still running at full rpms but the controls reduce the compressing action--less power to run the compressor--so there is a reduction in power used
The temperature variation is reduced because as the room warms a bit the compressor pumps a bit more gas and doesn't start at full load as per the old unit
Next , the latest units have better temperature / humidity recognition controls so they can be set at night so a room maintains an ambient temperature /humidity so that as the night gets cooler and the air drier you don't wake up freezing
It will even get to the point where you wonder if the unit is working
Lastly you can run the unit at a much higher setting ( 27 Degrees c instead of 24 or less and have the same comfort level as at 24-25 degrees c)
lastly warranty is for 2 years at best and parts will be available for the next 10 years against parts for your old unit

My LG fridge is not cooling after 3 days. when i switched ON after 1 week it cools back, but then after 3 days its not cooling again. I dont think its the heater or defrost sensor since both the upper and...

You may have a problem with the compressor relay switch or the control board. Run the unit until it stops cooling. Go into the back and see if the compressor is running. If not, check for voltage. If there is voltage, then replace the relay start switch. If there is no voltage, you will need to check the control board to see if there is voltage going to the relay switch.

I have a husky jump start / compressor station model HSK03 Everything was working fine, but now the compressor stopped working. Is there a reset button or curcuit breaker? Thank you

The model that I looked at on the internet has a high temperature switch that will not let the compressor run if it gets hot (about 15 minutes of operation).
It will cool down in 10 minutes and allow the compressor to run again.
This MAY be the problem.

Have maytag fridge about 5yrs old and is triggering the safety switch to go off every 5-6hrs , the freezer is ok the fridge is not cooling, what is the problem

Most likely it is short cycling because the start components or condenser fan are defective. This causes the compressor to run for a few minutes and stop because of overheating. The overheating is tripping the breaker. The cycle will not change until the issue with compressor or fan is resolved. To continue to allow it to run like this risk permanent compressor failure. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Every 2-3 minutes it sounds like something is trying to start and then the starter type switch stops, now freezer is starting to frost. It has been happening for about 3 weeks now but the starting noise...

Compressor problem. There are start components mounted on the side of the compressor, and should be removed and tested. The parts include the start relay, (start/run capacitor if it has one) and the overload switch.
To test these components you must have a working knowledge of electrical an use of a good VOM meter.
If not, remove the parts, and take them to an appliance parts house. They usually are happy to test them for you.
If they test O.K. you have a failed compressor.
P.S. If this machine is under 5 years old, the compressor is under warranty, (some have an extended 10 year warranty). if the warranty is in effect, do nothing. Call the dealer who would handle the warranty. You would have to pay for replacement of the start components, but having it serviced by an authorized warranty station will keep the balance of the compressor warranty in effect. Hope this helps... Fridge and freezer not cooling. The fan is running

Is the compressor clicking? If so, the pressure may be too high. tHis happens if the temperature control is lowered too soon after the compressor cuts off, or if house power fails for a shorrt period, etc.

1. UNPLUG the power cord.
2. Set the temperature dial to the settings you want.
3. Close doors and wait a full 10 minutes (more if you don't get impatient).
4. After 10 full minutes, plug power cord back in. It should start now.
5. Try not to open fridge for an hour or so, or until you hear tyhe compressor cycle off.

Hope this hellps!

Problem has returned to Maytag fridge

I note this is a very old post. The compressor is not starting and what you were hearing was the PTC relay energizing followed by the KilXon thermal overload kicking off the compressor start sequence. What happens is that the PTC relays sometimes get a heated contact. Due to the weakened state of the contact it can cause a buzz. Even with a goo PTC relay you would hear the compressor buzz if it was not starting. In that case the run capacitor may have failed or the compresor rotor is internally locked at which point the start cycle will repeat every 3 to 4 minutes as the thermal overload cycles and the compressor will not start.
