your encoder strip(a transprent strip behind the carriage) is either broken or loosed up and so it is not able to get self aligned.kindly fit the encoder properly or change the encoder if neccessary.encoders are usually very cheap.wish u luck!!

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer.
Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should
see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back
of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the
first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a
guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly.
Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once
you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the
self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.

Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the
troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.
We will replace the printer, only if it is under warranty.

In your case It seems like the Encoder strip is broken or its out of printer . However if you see encoder strip inside the printer connected from left to right, try these steps.
Solution:
1. Cleaning the encoder strip:
a. printer should be off and disconnected from power.
b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of
the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand
side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see
without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.
2. Repositioning the Encoder strip.
a. Remove the power cord from the printer.
b. Open the front cover.
c. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
d. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
e. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back
up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink
cartridge carrier.
f. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is
seated correctly.
g. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check
the positioning of the encoder strip.
h. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
i. Re-connect the power cord to the printer and try again to print.

I had this same problem, I found a long skinny thin plastic strip had fallen off & caused the problem for me. The plastic strip has slits at each side to attach to the inside back of printer, on the left side is a down ward facing arrow, the plastic strip feeds through the back middle of the cartridge carrier and then the slits are to be inserted to the metal tab like pieces on the back sides inside the printer on the right side (facing printer) it will look like a small rectangular hole with a longer metal tab like piece sticking out & on the left is a smaller squared like hole with a flat smaller metal like tab which will line up if the plastic strip is feed through the back of the cartridge carrier properly. This should allow the cartridge carrier to glide properly & work as it should, with no more banging! Sorry my tech. terminology isn't good, I am not Knowelegable with this sort of thing, just sharing my experience :) HTH!
Note:
There is a small slot on the back of the ink cartridge carrier, into which the encoder strip fits.
