My heater will not stay on. It struggles up and down and does not give off any heat.

You May have to hold down the pilot knob for a couple of minutes 2-3 maybe to assure it sences the heat. Give it a try if you already haven't.

what kind of heater is it? if it's an electric one and the fan is stopping or slowing it can be dangerous as the fan is needed to blow the heat away from the unit, if the fan stops the the heat builds up and can potentially cause a fire so if the fan stops but heater is still on turn it off right away. If it's an electric heater and less than a year old i'd suggest taking it back to where you purchased it, it should be covered providing you can find proof of purchase.

I would have the alternator checked as the heater takes a lot of battery power it sounds like the alternator is struggling to run the car and the heater at the same time

It's probably cycling off due to a high temp limit? Check air filter. Then you can check the blower operation. Does it seem strong or does it sound like it's struggling or blowing slower than usual. Also, if it has a cooling coil, it can get dirty, slows airflow, and allows furnace to overheat. More info would help. Do you have to reset it? Resets itself? What heater you have?

A thermocouple is a bi-metallic junction that when heated gives an small electric output. The tip of it sits where the pilot light is ( and it is a copper tube going to the gas valve) and the pilot light heats it up. It creates electricity after it heats up (which is why you have to hold the pilot light knob down when lighting) and opens the gas valve to keep pilot light lit after you let the pilot knob go back up. When it stays lit without having to hold it down, (make sure the thermostat is set low so it doesn't light the burner while you have your hand down there) then you turn the pilot knob to on. It should stay on and you can set the furnace to heat and raise the temperature where you want.

An impulse sealer heat-seals objects by sending high current on impulse to a heater ribbon, equipped on the surface of the heat-sealing blade, to generate heat that enables thermal-sealing through thermal conductivity. The section to be sealed is placed between the heat-sealing blades, pressed and thermal-fused when current and heat are delivered on impulse through the heater ribbon. Sounds like an airflow restriction. If you remove cover you are giving the fan all the possible air it can get, therefore it seems to run properly.

Your problem could be or probably is with the regulator...not enough gas pressure...

Check the water level. If the water is low it will not allow water into the heater core to produce heat. If there is water keep an eye on your temperature gauge It should reach at least 140 to 170 degrees. If it is staying colder than that you have a stuck thermostat which is allowing the water to flow to much and not let the engine warm up. The only other solution is if the fan is not working properly replace the fan relay for you blower.

Are you sure it is a thermostat issue and not a heating system problem? Some heating systems will cycle 3 times prior to going out on what is called a "Hard Lock-out". Give us some details on your heating system. Until then, get in front of your heating system and note what it dies, ie; unit fan starts, ignitor glows etc...
