Hi,
Try this.
1. Carefully take the battery out.
2. And you should see a white cable attached to an 'outlet'.
3. Unplug it and then wait about five seconds. plug it back in.

Chances are the reader is defective. Try to plug it into another computer to confirm this. If it works try another USB device to confirm that the port is working.
Sorry to hear your are having issues with your Cruz Reader. I have a Cruz Reader R101. Unfortunately you have to update via the SD card for the Cruz Reader. It doesn't do a firmware update from the USB cable.
If you don't want to try and update it now you could also try to just restart it. If you can't get it to restart normally you can remove the back cover and unplug the battery, then plug it back in.
Plug in the USB cable. My Vista machine recognized the Cruz as an external storage device (like a flash drive) and displayed a folder for the internal 4gb flash and another folder for the 2gb SD card I added. You can't access the folders from the Cruz while the PC is connected but you'll see any files you copy over once the cable is disconnected. (use Astro to view files in the folders)
