SOURCE: Replacing a power cord for a Dewalt electric drill
some of the dewalt drill switches have a one way trap (like) for the wire. you push the wire in and the harder you pull it gets tight on its self. your wires go in the bottom of the trigger look right on top of each wire there is a small **** (no bigger then 3/16) for a flat head screw drive. In the **** you will see a small lever, it needs to be turned at the same time pull. It will help to have a friend.

You will need to lay the drill on a bench then remove all the screws that hold the two halves of the case together, carefully pull the case apart to expose the wire connections

Yes , your approach to troubleshooting is a sane one .. start at one end and disconnect things untill the fault goes away. There may be a loose wire, one rubbed by a mounting screw, or a broken wire that is grounding the circuit. all these things should be looking for as you take each receptacle out and check it ..
SOURCE: where does the green wire connect from the power cord on a dewalt dw 236 drill
Your not clear at which end your working. If you are connecting green wire inside drill case , it will go to body of drill. If you are replacing a cable plug, it will go to the round pin connection on the inside of the plug. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.
