My mower will not move forward or backward and I did have the rear wheels off to repair flats. What is the key that may have been lost in the process? What does it look like?

SOURCE: Suddenly stopped then could not pull mower

Sounds like your mower has a safety mechanism that has locked up. On your push handle is a bar that must be pulled back in order to pull start cord, it has a cable that goes to the safety brake, check the cable to the safety brake on the flywheel, it may be broke. If it isn't in the safety brake itself, try spraying the cable with WD-40 as this may free it up. Or the cable may need replacing from wear. To check this pull back on the handle and watch the on the side of the engine where this cable attaches, if it is moving on the side of the engine then this cable won't be the problem. In this case it most likely will be the safety brake itself that's the problem. Do not remove the safety brake if under warranty as this will void your warranty.

The right rear wheel intermittently locks up on my lawnmower when going forward stopping forward movement temporarily, until I move it backwards to "unlock" it. Any ideas?

There is an excellent 3 part video that may help you to fix this problem. Please see the 2nd and 3rd videos:
https://youtu.be/Vk_tpjKlbjM
https://youtu.be/DdiewLxTQDc
Things you can try:
(1) Remove casing over rear wheel drive assembly and perform a test run to assure all parts are moving as expected
(2) Lubricate the shafts with lightweight motor oil where the shaft penetrates into the gear box of each wheel
(3) Remove each rear wheel, inspect gears for damage and free movement. Grease up each drive gear and the shaft.
(4) Inspect gears on each wheel for damage.
(5) If none of the above fixes the problem, try swapping out the front wheels to the rear wheels provided the front wheels can accommodate the gearing on the rear wheels
(6) If this doesn't work try replacing the small gear assembly on the right rear wheel
These steps are illustrated in the videos.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Why doesn't it move forward or in reverse?

Many tractors and mowers have a key way on the axle and axle bore on the wheel hub.. Did you remove the tire and wheel from the mower axle? ..if you did most likely the drive axle key fell out of its slot on the drive axle and when you replaced the wheel it has no way to drive the wheels..try this start the mower put it in gear and try to move..have someone watch the end of the axle at the wheel
..if the key is missing the axle will be turning..but not the wheel..any good hardware store should carry them. just measure the depth and width of the key..something like 1/4,3/8 etc...good luck..

My 42" Husqvarna (model #917.279240

Remove the center dust caps from the rear axles, start the tractor up and put it in gear and observe the axles, if one of them is spinning freely inside the wheel, you have lost the 1/4" square key that pins the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you can go back to mowing. Hope this helped Tim

Won't move

Remove the center dust caps from the rear axles, start the tractor up and put it in gear and observe the axles, if one of them is spinning freely inside the wheel, you have lost the 1/4" square key that pins the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you can go back to mowing. This often happens when a flat has been repaired and the wheel pushes the key out the back as you slide it back on the axle. Sometimes it will just barely catch at the edge of the wheel and work for a while then fall out and you not even know it

Our 20 hp 46" cut Husqvarna '08 riding mower will crank just fine but will not move forward or backward.

Check to make sure the belt that runs from the engine pulley back to the transaxle is on all the pulleys. If it is a hydrostatic transaxle make sure the free wheel control lever at the back of the tractor is in correct position, or the brake plate may be stuck on but that would make a loud grinding sound. If it is a gear drive make sure the transaxle pulley is turning and make sure you didn't lose a rear wheel key from the axle,(if you had the tire off for a repair it is easy to lose the key when you go to put the tire back on.

Cratsman lt2000 lawn tractor will start but will not move forward or backward. I tried changing the drive belt, but that didn't work.

Is the transaxle pulley turning? If so have you removed the rear wheel recently and possibly lost the square key that fits on the axle?check those two items first. If ok it probably has a broken gear or shift key in transaxle.
