Hi Myra.
There are two ways to connect a shared printer to another PC: using Settings or Control Panel. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Under Add printers & scanners, select Add a printer or scanner. Choosethe printer you want, and then select Add Device.

Desktop computer windows xp...sons laptop windows 7 ..wireless router....same internete signal...can his laptop find my printer..or do i need to run same cd on my sons laptop..to get it to install on...

Hi,

Yes it is possible, you have to install the pritner software on your Sons laptop.

1) For sharing, if you have a network printer connected to your router, then select the network option while installing the printer (If you would have given us the printer model and make we could have given step by step instructions).

2) If the printer is connected to your XP computer and you want to share it, share the printer from XP as mentioned in the steps below.

>> Open Printers and Faxes. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
>> Right-click the printer you want to share, and then click Sharing.
>> On the Sharing tab, click Share this printer and then type a share name for the shared printer (e.g. MyPrinter), click on Apply and Ok. (as shown below)

Now goto the Windows 7 laptop and follow the steps as mentioned below,

>> Click Start >> Click on Devices and Printers >> Click on Add Printer (as shown below)

shreysri_9.jpg
>> A new window will come up, click on Add a network printer (as shown below)

shreysri_11.jpg
>> The laptop will search the network for the printer and display it on the list, click on the printer and click on next. The laptop will install the software required, do ensure the printer installation disc is in the laptop in case if Windows 7 wont have the driver it will take it from the disc.

Im trying to set up wired computer desktop to share my new s605 to my sons laptop wireless...do i need to use the CD enclosed with the printer and put it in my sons laptop to install the printer on his...

Yes you need to setup the printer as a shared printer using the printer driver CD.
Your shared printer and computer would need to be on your LAN and connected to a wireless router. The laptop will connect to the shares printer via the wireless router and LAN cable to the computer with the shared printer.
Please click on this link and follow my instructions to setup the shared printer.

Wireless Laptop and Wired Desktop cannot communicate

Simply printer sharing should be enabled on both computers as well as file sharing.

Wireless printing

I assume you have a wireless network set up with a wireless router, since you said you have a wireless laptop.
You need to share the printer on the desktop. You also need to set up both computers to be on the same network (for example, WORKGROUP or MSHOME, or a name of your choosing).Once shared and on the same network, you can go to the laptop and add a printer--just tell it that it is a network printer.
A caution--to work without further hassle, both computers need to be running the same version of Windows. If not, you'll need the driver disk for the system on your laptop.

Trying to connect share printer w/Vista

If you connect the printer to the desktop computer and enable file and printer sharing on that computer. You will then need to go into printers and faxes and share your printer. Then go to the laptop and browse the network so you are looking at the desktop computer. You should see a folder that says printers. Open the printers folder and you should see the printer you just shared. Double click on it to install the shared printer on your laptop.

Now when you print from the laptop, you will print to the shared printer that you just installed (you may have to select it from the printer list). That will send the print job through the network to the desktop and the desktop will send it to the printer (the desktop will need to be turned on for you to be able to print).

If you don't want to have to leave your destop turned on just so you can print, you should look at a print server for your printer. That will connect the printer straight to the network. Then both computers will print to the printer over the network.

I am trying to share a printer.

Are they both under the same network? Can the pc find the laptop under network connections and vice versa? If not, then right-click my computer, go to properties, go to the tab 'Computer Name' click on the button change, and make it part of a workgroup of your choice of name. Do this for both making them part of the SAME workgroup.
Then, make your printer shared under that workgroup.

Help please....printer name does NOT appear

You must have a network set up, and you must enable file and printer sharing on the desktop. The laptop and the desktop should be in the same workgroup. Some firewalls will cause this problem.
Start with the network setup wizard in Settings/Network.
