You will see a spark jump from the plug body to ground if it isn't tightly grounded to the engine. However a spark should also jump the gap in the plug at the same time. It can be difficult to check a plug this way because it tends to bounce around the place when pull starting the engine. You could try getting a bit of wire and clipping on end to the exhaust or fin on the engine with a crocodile clip, clothes peg or vice grips. The other end of the wire could be wrapped around the threads of the plug and held with a clip.
