SOURCE: Washing cycle starts and takes hours even for short cycle.

Try checking for good water supply.
Pull out detergent tray and check for good water supply during filling.
if poor filling-
Try checking the hoses.
Turn taps off, disconnect from machine, place hose end in sink, turn tap on and check for good water flow.
if the hose has a red indicator in the side of the hose (end which is fitted to the tap) - Red indicator is a failed hose.(for models with Water Stop hose type "B")

SOURCE: Bosch dishwasher cycle doesn't end

Try this link, http://www.applianceaid.com/boschDW.html for procedures for running self-tests on various Bosch models using the front door switches. Find your model and read and follow the procedure.
This remaining at '1' problem invariably relates to a 'heater fault' which has usually been traced to an open solder joint on the control board located behind the switches/indicator lights on front door. See pic here of open solder joint http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenzoidman/145089572/ In most cases, the heating element has not been at fault.
I got mine going again by resoldering the joint and saved ~$300 in parts & labour. If this is beyond your skill set, then replace the control board assembly, 266746, which is used on multiple Bosch models. See this page for more information if you want to try to DIY. http://www.appliancejournal.com/appliance-parts/bosch-appliance-parts/bosch-dishwasher-control-module-266746-37/

If this is still beyond your skill set, then call a tech & supply the Bosch model, serial number, and the results of the self-tests.

SOURCE: will not complete cycle

Your "cycle selection switch" is probably the timer motor. If tapping it lightlly gets it going again it will probably need replaced. It could be a loose connection but I would need to know the model number to tell how to get into the inside of the control panel to look. If you do get adventurous, be sure to unplug the washer before taking the panel apart.

SOURCE: my bosch 5316 runs for over 2 hours. any ideas?

This is typically caused by a heater/heating fault, but not necessarily the heater. It is much more likely poor solder on the control for the heater relay. If you are proficient with electronics, or willing to dig deeper it is a repairable solder contact...usually, but you must be able to solder. If not the replacement part is a BT-266746. Having said that, I'd think you'd be best served by me if I suggested you call a tech in your area, preferably a bosch (b/s/h) authorized servicer. Hope this helps, give me some feedback so I know if we can help further. Good luck

How long should the heavy wash cycle run? I have been using the regular cycle but decided to use the heavy duty when washing the filters from my range hood. Should it take over 2 hours?

The heavy cycle typically takes a long time because it includes a short soak and prewash. The older hot fill washers were quicker but used more water while the newer cold fill washers are claimed to use a third less water and so need to take longer over the wash.

The heating of the water also adds time to the cycle. Modern detergents work best, the manufacturers claim, with a rising temperature.

I have a dishwasher bosch model SHE3AR55UC/07. I press the ON button to turn dishwasher on. And when I press START button, the dishwasher does not start.

Many Bosch dishwashers have a design flaw...the door will not fully close and pops out after you start it. When this happens the D/W will not run. You can go to the Bosch website to order the part to fix this and no they will not reimburse you nor acknowledge your email to customer service.

Fisher washer stays on clen for over 3 hours

"Fisher washer stays on clen for over 3 hours" ???
I think you mean the "Dishwasher stays in the clean cycle for over 3 hours", right? First question is "What cycle?" If it's the Pots and Pans cycle, or "Pro-wash cycle" , or "Normal cycle with extra wash heat or sani-rinse options selected, then yes, this is normal! A Normal cycle (without added heat) will take about 2 hours. And a short or quick or 1-hour cycle will take less.

Dishwasher takes 3 hours to run through programme

3 hours isn't "extremely" long. If you run a normal cycle, it should run about 2-2:30 hours normally with the drying cycle. Now if it's over 3 hours, that would be a problem. Make sure that when you open the door that there is a lot of steam coming out, because that is the only thing that can extend the cycle is if the dishwasher isn't heating the water. Unfortunately this is a very common issue and it means that your control board inside the door has failed. There is a relay on the board that shorts out. This relay sends power to the heater, so when it fails the dishwasher doesn't wash well and it will run forever trying to heat the water which will never happen.

My 7 year old Bosch dishwasher (SHE56C) started to run for hours when set to wash on any cycle.

Do you hear it go into the drain cycle that is do you hear the drain pump run at some stage. What happens in the rinse program (short cycle)? It is likely the thermostat is not working or the water temperature is too low due to heater problems.

How long is the light wash cycle suppossed to run and does the options cycle need to be run too? i have put my machine on light cycle and it runs back and forth from sensing to wash .. stops and goes back...

Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today.Yes it is normal. The length of the cycle depends on the water temperature entering the unit and the options selected. The unit has a sensor that checks the water constantly until it is clean. A normal cycle on this unit with options selected can last two hours. And stopping the unit and opening the door extends the time also.

The washing cycle takes 2 hours to complete

Make sure the sani cycle is not selected, or pots and pans, also with the dry cycle most will take about 2 hours, if your dishes are not that dirty use the short cycle. Be sure your water is at least 130 F. Run hot water at faucet before starting the machine.
