Replace battery. That is a guess from no brand name or model number.

Testimonial: "It doesn't have a battery. Model number IH-BL-M610R, iHome brand. (my apologies for not adding that). I am the copy editor of a monthly newsletter. Touch screens and Microsoft Word simply do not mix, so I ended up buying a new one. Thank you anyway."

SOURCE: MS Wireless notebook mouse 4000

Hi,

I have a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000.

I have tried: 1) new batteries in the mouse; 2) re-synching the mouse & USB plug in device; and 3) installing (what I think was the software for this mouse) - all to no avail.

The light does not come on the USB plug in no matter which USB port I use and the error message reads "USB device not recognized".

download.com did not have a download for this device to try to re-load it.

Any help or suggestions?

SOURCE: USB device not recognized

This solution worked for me when I got the USB device not recognized message:
http://www.infobarrel.com/USB_Port_Repair
It can be quite frustrating. I've heard that older computers are more likely to have the USB device not recognized message.

I bout retractable travel mouse and doesn't seem to work on my labtop

It may have a manufacturing defect. Have you tried it on another computer? If it works on another computer, see whether it works when connected to a different USB port on the laptop. If it does, then you may have a bad or damaged USB port on the laptop. If it works on another computer but still does not work on the laptop when connected through an alternate port, then see whether some other device will work when attached to the laptop's USB port. If neither the mouse nor the other device work when connected to a USB port, then you have a problem with the USB controller. If an alternate device does work when connected to the USB ports of the laptop, and if the mouse works when connected to another computer but does not work when connected to the laptop, then you have a software problem, and probably need to change the mouse driver in a control panel or setting in the operating system of your laptop.

Why did my mini travel mouse w/ retractable cord suddenly stopped functioning? It does nothing when plugged into my laptop. Its acting like the batteries are dead, however, I know it DOES NOT use...

Try these three steps:
1. If your Laptop has more than one USB Slot, you might want to try that second USB slot and have the mouse connected to it.
2. Try the mouse on a different PC or a Laptop. See if it works on there. Sometimes it takes about 10 seconds for a PC to identify the new device thats just connected to it. So you might want to wait a bit and see if the mouse is accepted on the new PC your going to try it on or .... not.
3. If none of the above worked. Go back to your Laptop, then go to your Control Panel>System>Device Manager> double click Mice and other pointing devices>Check and see if your mouse is on there, if it is there, see if it is disabled or not. If it is disabled, just right click on it there and enable it. If its not there move to the next step.
4. Now its time to check the USB Slots, find any other device that you can get hold of, like a desktop USB keyboard, or a different mouse from anywhere just to test your Laptop hardware. See if it'll work! If they did, well!! You know what you have to do next!!. lol

M trying to fix my retractable mouse. do you have any diagram showing how the insides of the retractable mechanism looks like. much thanks!

Optical mouse from inside: http://www.gadgetrivia.com/photos/o/56422-best_optical_mouse.jpg (this isn't a retractable mouse, but the inside looks exactly the same, only the cord this different which doesn't matter in this situation).
Here are instructions for optical mouse repair: http://www.thenetguruz.com/hardware/diy-optical-mouse-repair/
But if your mouse doesn't work first plug the mouse in the USB slot and check the laser beam under the mouse - if there is no light, the mouse is dead, and you should return it to the seller for replacement. (Such a thin cable of the mouse is very vulnerable and might break easily. More over I find many negative reviews about this rectractable mouse - so if your seller offers to replace it - ask for a different model or test it with your laptop right in the shop before bringing it home.)
2) Here is a solution that already worked for another user, but was very complicated: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Keyboards-Touchpads/USB-mouse-not-recognized-drivers-can-t-be-installed/m-p/23526
3) Or alternatively download and install a free driver updater software, e.g. http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/index.htm - let it scan and update all your missing drivers - it may fix USB general problems if this causes also the mouse problems.

I just bought a new mouse for my laptop. It is a Targus Kaleidoscope Optical Mouse. For my HP Pavilion dv2700, I plugged it in and it will not work,it did install itself several times.Everytime I plugged...

First thing you need to do is to know that the USB ports of your laptop is really working. Insert another usb devices or storage such a flash disk. If the flash disk being inserted is not recognized by the system then the usb port you had inserted is malfunctioning or it is defective. But if the other usb devices like the flash disk is working then your new bought mouse is defective. Try to plug the usb mouse to the other ports available in your laptop.
