Sounds like a sticky brake assy. This type of brake is very tricky and should be checked be a service technician
It's possible to do it yourself but not recommended because of the 200 lb. pressure spring. Hope the diagram will help.

The motor is faulty. Either the relay contacts are stuck or there is a shorted winding. Best to replace the motor.
SOURCE: Washer will not agitate but will spin
It sounds like the plastic inside the agitator cog are worn. The smell is the plastic cog turning but the agitator not turning.
Take off the top
of the agitator. If any screw are available remove them. If not grab
the agitator from the bottom and yank off. Unscrew the agitator drive
cog and inspect underside of agitator. Go to an appliance repair shop
and reorder a new one. Between $15-30.

If the timer is advancing but won't spin out, it is possible that the spin contacts inside the timer are faulty. A technician will normally isolate and confirm this diagnosis witth a special power cord hookup to the motor. From the way you describe your complaint, I feel that a timer would correct your problem.
Hope this advice is helpful!

Tip the machine back remove the belt try to turn the drive pulley manually . sorry the larger pulley in the centre. if you can turn it counter clockwise and feel the inner drum moving then the thrust bearing is ok. if not you may need to replace it.Also a bad lid switch can cause this problem.
Jose,
I'm an owner of three FAV6800A machines and I'll respond to help because you want to roll up your sleeves and try to save your $1K machine.
1st No direct links Google this Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW
In the Sticky: Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down you will find a link to the Service Manual. You absolutely need the Service Manual to DIY issues with the machine. It's not the best SM but will get you started. I also have repair post in that sticky to help with the most common issues that I have helped owners with.
Post in that forum your machine Model which I assume is an FAV6800A (LED Console) or FAV9800A (LCD Console)
Include the first two digits of you machines model number. That is the series of your machine.
Give a description of the issue as you did here. I hope the grinding is during wash/agitate if so it may be something as simple as tumbler removal to clear out debris. If the grinding is in Spin Cycle it could be a bit more work like Outer Tub bearing failure.
The Forum in my opinion is geared more toward the DIY owner as I am and as you sound. The forum is free like this and my support is free..........Good Luck D*ick
