Verify that the disc turns, put it in the tray, observe the position, enter it, wait for the indication of "No Disc" and remove the disc, if it is in the same place, apparently, it would have problems in the disc engine
Another way to check if the engine works, play an audio CD, if you read it, apparently the engine, it would not be the cause of the failure
If I notice that I turn, I could have dirt problems in the lens of the reader, proceed to clean it with a cotton swab and if you do not know how to do it, contact a technical service
Another option, it is possible that your reader is under power to read the DVD

I have the Denon 2900 (about 4 years of use) and until recently, suffered from the same (growing) problem. CD's were very difficult to start/read. I recently found advice which I tried and was succesful with. It was manually cleaning the laserlens. I took away the outer housing by unscrewing all off the on top (6), side (4) and the back (2) bolts. After that I took out the top plate of the laserunit which took two very little screws taking out. Now you are looking at the cd-tray with the lens. Take a very soft and clean cloth and moisten it a little bit with clean water (be very carefull with the moistening, don't allow any waterdrop to come out of the cloth into the laserlens while cleaning! Carefully clean the lens and dry it with a dry part of the same cloth. Replace the top plate and the outer housing and the player will recognize the discs like it's new again. Good luck! SOURCE: Denon 2910 CD player malfunctions
Hi,
There has been a number of reports of similar issues with Denon models that utilizes the 'PureProgressive technology'. Some of the issues and tried corrective measures are -
1. It would appear that in certain occasion, performing a "region free hack" disables the 'PureProgressive technology' and one solution tried is to set the unit to NTSC and not multi or PAL;
2. disable/turn-off digital output;
3. some has reported significant improvement when a firmware upgrade was performed;
4. use DVI instead of of other outputs.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.
