Why will my Briggs 21HP,single cylinder, OHV engine not turn over with the starter?

With the spark plug out the starter spins the flywheel easily. The push rods, rocker arms, and valve stems all move as I think they should. The starter rotor has no end or side play and all brushes are good. [ took the end plate off but did not remove the rotor. The battery voltage is 12.54 at the terminals. With the plug installed, the starter will rotate the flywheel to a point and stop. When the starter is deenergized, the flywheel rotates slightly in reverse. Any help would be appreciated.

Adjust the valve clearances. One or both are opening too late. Find TDC(top dead center) of your compression stroke for each cylinder before adjusting.

Starter "stall" is typically from decompression failure. Most likely cause is improper valve lash. See maintenance schedule.

They make valve stem caps to raise the hight of the valve stem & stop the rocker from making contact with the spring retainer.Good luck,

SOURCE: i need to adjust rocker arm clearance on a 15.5 briggs engine

you go to the briggs & stratton website, already knowing the numbers from the side of the engine, you look the clearances up under support.

you go to you tube and search, i am sure there will be some videos on there for adjusting rocker arm clearance. one short movie is worth a thousand words. the key is to understand the timing. where the piston is in relationship to where the valve should be. once you have them adjusted, make sure you turn the engine over a few times without the plugs in, and then do it again.

SOURCE: 22 hp. Kohler engine has new push rods and rocker

check the valve lash sounds like you have them adjusted wrong, put the piston top dead center, with the rocker arms level with each other before you set them

20hp briggs an stratton riding mower want turn over but a half of a turn even with a jump

Check oil level, if ok remove spark plug and crank engine. If it spins then likely "starter stall" due to valve lash out of tolerance. BS OHV engines require periodic adjustment of the valves.

If oil level is excessively high then likely engine has hydro-locked... the cylinder(s) are full of oil/fuel due to a stuck carburetor float.

Briggs 21 hp OHV motor will not start after internal work.

most likely that the timing is not correct
you line up the dots on the crank gear and the cam gear not the flywheel and the the crank shaft dot
the plug will spark every time the flywheel magnet passed the coil

Starter spins but will not engage flywheel...

Check the flywheel for areas of damaged teeth also. Broken teeth on the starter drive gear may inticate damage to flywheel also.

Hard start

Snooper, I removed my spark plug and the engine turns fine. It turns slow when the plug is replaced(cylinder #2). I have just replaced the starter motor and that does not seem to be the problem. Any thoughts?
