First check the fuel tank cap. Leave the cap off and start the engine. If it runs ok the little breather hole in the cap is blocked. Unblock it. If the engine still stops check the fuel line and fuel filter it could be that the fuel is coming though slowly so you get enough to start it but its not enough to keep it running. If its still a problem: strip and clean the carburettor.
May be water in carburetor bowl. Loosen what looks like a bolt (main jet) on the bottom of the carburetor ~1 turn. The fuel/water will drain out of the carburetor (and fuel tank). Drain at least a cup of fluid or until tank is empty. Try to capture the fluid and transfer to a clear glass jar. If you let set a minute, if there's water in the fuel there will be a visible water line in the jar (water on bottom, fuel on top).
Check your air filter is clean too.
Make sure Oil level is correct.....This engine will shut down if low on Oil.......

You need to rebuild your carb. The diaphram in the carb has gotten hard and is no longer acting as a fuel pump to pump the fuel to the carb. Get a rebuild kit and a compressor (for compressed air) to blow out the jet passages. It is an medium to easy job, just watch the small parts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hint: Before you remove your fuel/air jets, bottom them out first and count the number of turns it takes to bottom them out and mark it down for each fuel/air jet. When you go to reinstall the fuel/air jets bottom them out and then back them back out to the number of turns before removal. That way the fuel/air jets are set to the right number of turns when it was running right. Good Luck, I hope this helped Please rate me...Thanks
SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton 3hp engine Flymo won't spark/start
Sounds like u are leaking spark before the plug. Sand paper off the fly wheel and magnet, and also the bottom of the coil legs. I like the ol folding match book thickness when setting the gap back between the two. If this engine still has the points and condenser u also need to remove the flywheel and check those out. Clean the pint contacts with the sand paper and make sure with your flaslight that the small wire out of the point box is not grounding out from a bad spot somewhere also. If so, use some liquid tape to repair. U can do this, don't give up to the repair buzzards. U already know about he fresh gas but also check the exhaust for any bug nests.
Good luck

SOURCE: I can start my 4.75 HP Briggs & Stratton
Try replacing the float and needle. The float (floats) and pulls the needle up to let gas through to the carb. It will stay running as long as you press the prime bulb because this sends gas straight to the carb without going through the gas bowl. It's best to remove the carb and clean it then replace the float and needle
SOURCE: Pressure washer won't run.
Although this costs a little money, it covers most home gas/electric and industrial portable kerosine/diesel fired hot water pressure washers. Worth sharing... ">
Had the same problem with an almost new Craftsman w/ Intek 20.0 HP. Check all the "usual suspects" and had to have a tech come out. He had me start it. It ran for a few minutes and stopped (per usual). He immediately went to the Anti-Backfire solenoid. It is an electrically operated "plunger-style" fuel line blocker. They are famous for going bad. The part is about $65 and its sole purpose is to starve the engine of its fuel supply at shutdown so it won't backfire. If it is disabled, the user must throttle the engine down for 10 seconds or so before turning the key off in order to avoid backfires. Gee... let's see, 10 seconds of my time each time I use the mower vs $65 part ... No contest! Remove the solenoid, take a pair of electrician side cutters and snip off the tip of the plunger and reinstall it. Problem solved ! ! !
