hello mate, i bought a brand new indesit d40. plumbed it in and the 1st light kept flashing, phoned the technical centre and they said its the anti flood mechanism kicking in and preventing it from working. although water was going in it was not going into the dishwasher but filling the base and the safety feature just shut it off. said to get back in touch with comet who i bought it off for a new one because its a manufacturing problem. put the new one in and theres no problem. wouldn't have a clue how to fix it myself though.

try testing the door interlock, actually this is only a micro switch inside the door behind the plastic front panel, there could also be the possibility there is a broken wire behind the door skin just above the hinge part, take care when working on appliances do not force parts to remove them and always unplug at the mains hope i have helped, if so please rate me well

Make sure you get water to the dishwasher. Check to see if the water shut-off valve (located under the sink) is open. If you get water to the dishwasher, but there is still no water inside during the fill cycle, the problem might be with a faulty water valve (located at the bottom of the dishwasher, behind the kick panel, on either side), in which case replace the water valve.

I also had this problem, it was the automatic anti-flood device, the upper spray arm water pie was leaking into base off unit which operated the anti-flood device.
Hope this is of some use to you and others

You will need to provide the model number of the dishwasher. However, the likely causes of the lights flashing are many, including water inlet failure, blocked drain filter, leaking seals causing flood switch to trip. You may want to go to the Hotpoint site and find the manual for your model.
