This once happened to me the only thing you have to do is clean the disk reader with a wipe.

Did you try turning the disk over so the label shows on the opposite side. With the Wii you have to put them in upside down it seems.

If Wii gives Unreadable disc, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc. If the console itself is giving disc read error then it needs to be repaired. You may check out DIY Wii Fix Guide, that will show step by step information to fix the problem yourself. Try a cleaning disc. this may fix this issue. if the issue remains, it will confirm a major problem within the optical assembly. you will need to replace the optical assembly in this case. it has failed.

Contact Nintendo for the optical replacement procedure.

Unable to Read the Disc / Disc Could Not Be Read Situation:
  • System displays either error message "Unable to read disc" or "Disc could not be read"

What to do:
  • This message may display if the disc is ejected during play. Return to the HOME Menu before changing discs.

  • If the Wii console is laying flat, verify that the system is not placed upside-down. The game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.

  • Verify that the disc is being inserted properly.
    • If the console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right. Note: Only Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 are intended to be placed vertically (learn more)


    • If the console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards.

  • If the problem occurs with only one game disc, there may be a problem specific to that game. Click here to check our list of specific game issues.

Situation Not Resolved:

The wii is giving the message "unable to read
  • This message can display if you eject a disc during game play. If this is when the message displayed, make sure that you return to the Wii Menu before changing discs if you wish to play a different game.


  • If your Wii console is laying flat, it may be positioned upside down. Ensure that is positioned right-side up: the game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.

  • Ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc.
    • If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.
    • If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards

To install wii fit
    "Unable to read the disc" / "Disc could not be read" / "Eject the Game Disc" Error Message.
    If you are getting one of the above error messages:
  • Ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc. insertdisccorrect.gif
    • If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.
    • If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards


  • If you know you are inserting the Game Disc correctly, but are still have the same problem with only one game (or if you only have one game), try cleaning the Game Disc by following the disc cleaning procedures
