This is usually dirt in the carburettor or blockage in the fuel line. Clean the carb.again and make sure the main jet is clear and clean of any sediment. Buy a can of carb cleaner. Reassemble it carefully making sure all the adjustments are set as recommended or, if you dont have the data use the mid point.
Check plugs for proper gap, or gap 0.005" less and see if symptoms change <?>.
The only other suggestion I have is connect a piece of transparent fuel line to the carburetor drain port and loop it up along side of carburetor to some convenient point higher than the carb. This will give you a live visual of the fuel level inside the carburetor. Fuel level should be near top of fuel bowl while engine is running. Level will change when engine is shut off (don't care).

If the engine is running rough then this could mean that you have weak spark or valve adjustment. When an engine runs rough it will not burn all the fuel, which will create excess fuel in the air cleaner housing. Also, make sure the the float is closing in the carberator.

Hi Dave, it sounds crazy, but try this. Check your gas cap. It could be clogged, causing a vacuum to occur in the tank, and therefore not allowing the carb. to take on gas. It usually take 10-15 min. for this to occur. The next time you run the mower and it starts to stall out, loosen the gas cap and see if it begins to run again. If it does, then you know that the gas cap is clogged.

I had the same problem. If it is a 2 cylinder, remove the valve covers. On one side, the rocker arm had slipped off of the push rod. It was real loose. Put the rocker arm back on the push rod and tighten it down. I think this will do the trick.

ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!

Yes you may need a carb kit. It is not good practice to by-pass the fuel filter. The orifice in the jet is very small.
But anyways, There Could still be a blockage inside the carb, a small leak at the manifold, or the jet is worn out.
Let me know how it goes.
