It should have a wire running to the valve and it should vibrate, hum,or click when you touch with the switch turned on and off by hand if it doesn't check fuses
If you want to test the anti afterfire solenoid, merely disconnect the wire at the solenoid while the engine is running. It should die from lack of fuel after a few seconds, certainly less than a minute.
If the engine will not run and you suspect the afterfire solenoid, you can remove the plunger from the solenoid and put the solenoid back in bottom of carburetor and then attempt to start engine. If it still won't start/run then the problem is not the afterfire solenoid.
One caveat with this test method. If the engine kill shunt is somehow not working and engine OFF has relied on the anti afterfire solenoid, the engine won't shut off with the key. You will have to remove the NEG (frame ground) battery connection to kill the engine.
SOURCE: Lawn mower will not stay cranked unless you keep pouring gas into
common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com

SOURCE: Murray 4.5 hp Q lawn mower runs rough and smokes.
White smoke indicates that it is burning oil. The smoke would be black if it was running rich. So probably the rings will need to be replaced eventually. These mowers are prone to problems but the carbie is least likely to be the problem. So before you adjust the carbie take the cover off the top and give it a good clean and check that all the hoses are connected and are not cracked. Then make sure the airfilter is clean, blow it out with an air compessor or better still get a new one. Then try it out agian. If this doesn't help there is two screws on the carby marked L and H. Turn these only 1/8th of a turn at a time and note or make their current position. Start with the H scew with the mower at full revs. Turn anti clockwise untill you get max revs then turn it back a bit. Running too lean will over heat the motor and damage it. Then if needed adjust the L (or Low)screw. If you get black or grey smoke when you push the throttle up from idle to full its too rich so turn clockwise. If if slows before it picks up to full revs turn anti clockwise.

I am working on one now. Customer said "it doesn't run". Ok. So, after oil/spark plug/air filter replacement...it didn't have any gas getting to the carb. Took off the bowl, and on this 2005 lawnmower, the inside of ALL of the carb was covered with a white/chalky film. Looked like tiny rust barnacles over ANY metal surface available. Silty white stuff in bowl. Blasted it all w/carb cleaner. Still couldn't get primer to work, but after I sprayed a bit o' starter in the cylinder, it started well & kept running. Until I let the bar down. Needs a new carb. Will see what the customer wants.
SOURCE: I have a 14 HP Kawasaki engine on my John Deere
All the "safety" engine-kill "features" on this mower will ground the ignition system, stopping the engine and causing a no-spark condition. Check the seat switch, the brake switch. Also, the circuit board will cause the problem you have if it gets rained on, (the mower hood does not protect it); point is do not let the mower get rained on (or washed) unless you protect the PC board, which is right behind the ignition switch. Mine dried out and worked again but only after liberal spraying with (plastic-safe) electronic parts cleaner. You are right the manual would help, it's like $76 but it's in depth. Good luck, and PLEASE tell us what the solution was!

Helpful Deere lx176, lx178, hood hinge tip: If the hood hinge is broken on yours like on most, Deere has a GREAT repair kit that's only $10. They really priced it at cost or less to correct a defect they are aware of.
