Honda HF 2417. Engine stalls when cutters engaged. Restars ok but just stalls as soon as cutters selected.

I mowed over a large rock that was hidden in long grass. It made a loud noise and the engine stalled but restarted with no problem. Now, when I engage the cutters the engine stalls immediately. All looks ok underneath and the blades can be rotated by hand. Any ideas please?

SOURCE: lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.

SOURCE: Mower blades engages but when I stop to empty grass they will not

yes it is there is one under the seat & under the dash & there is also one connected to the clutch/ brake peddle which is more than likely the one giving you problems is the clutch/brake peddle switch

SOURCE: engine stalls when blade is engaged

the best way to check is to run the engine with you on it then lift off the seat and see if the seat sensor is cutting off then put a bag with some weight in it and turn on the engine it should run ok if the sensor is working and lift the back box to see if the sensor works there.. the other cause could be a build up of grass in teh cutter area stopping the blades fron moving this can caus a stall if you get a hose and blast under the cutter guards and make shure the grass shute is clear for the grass to exit this may help to mine cuts out if there is a blockage here and the grass cant get out after it has been cut it builds up at the exit plates.. Hope this works AB

SOURCE: Craftsman zero turn - blades won't engage

The PTO switch contacts to operate the clutch that starts the blades is defective. I have replaced mine and the new one just failed again. Sears must know this is a defect problem but so far they are quiet about the problem

SOURCE: After mowing a heavy clump

Ouch! Is the clanking sound coming from the blade / deck or is it in the engine. It sounds like you hit a stump or a rock in that tall grass and stopped the blade. Under normal operation, what is suppose to happen is that the timing key will break off and you can replace it. If not, then usually the crank shaft will get bent and in such case, you probably need to replace the engine. It is also possible that on the lighter side, something got knocked out of kilter and the blade is hitting the deck on one side. Look underneath and turn the blade AFTER YOU REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG WIRE!!! NEVER EVER TURN THE BLADE WITH THE PLUG WIRE ATTACHED; THE ENGINE COULD START AND CUT OFF YOUR HAND!!! See if the blade is hitting anything in its full revolution. If it is, it'll make a hell of a racket. Good Luck.

Tractor pto grinds and wont engage, but if I disconnect the cutter. it works engage fine

Sounds like there may be a problem with the cutter.
Sometimes the drive/spindle connections get damaged (especially if you've been mowing rocks like I sometimes do).
Tell us what machine you are working with and we'll try to help.

Honda 2417 engine dies when engage cutting

The governor that senses the load is not automatically moving the throttle on the carburetor or the mixture adjustment on carb. is not adjusted correctly. This is my best guess with the info you gave me.

Ride on mower can ride around but whe engage fanbelt for cutter motor stall no power but very thing does turn easy with hand

Sounds like your mower deck safety switch is bad..it is located near the end of the handle that engages the mower deck..try unhooking it and bypassing it with a wire or heavy paper clip...then try mowing if it mows that is your problem..the mower deck will, operate that way but is a safety switch..you need to get it replace,,easy to do yourself..good luck.

It's a good engine. Need more specifics.
It runs for 5 minutes?? it stalls as soon as it revs?
Did the problem just happen the week after mowing or has it been this way after the mower sat for months?

Just got one of these mowers myself - accidentally got a large stone caught in the blades which caused the same problem. It looked to me that there's a sensor on the flywheel that cuts the motor if the blades aren't rotating freely. You might find either that the sensor is broken (check it by pulling off the connectors and connecting them together) or that the blades aren't rotating for some reason.
