1. Check the on/off button these can also be troublesome and if you've stood on the cable once or twice you could have a break in the wire and it's shorting, check by turning on and wiggle cable around where it enters machine.
2. Faulty thermocouple, it is held in a white plastic housing screwed with one T15 torx screw to the motor housing. You could replace it but I just shorted mine with some wire and it hasn't failed since and more importantly not caught fire yet!

Have you tried calling Dyson? I had a problem with my Animal, and their tech department talked me though the fix. Worth trying them first.

Hi Nicky, it's Jack at Dyson.
An unusual noise like you've described could be caused by the machine's relief valve opening. This would usually occur if airflow through the vacuum is blocked - either by a filter which is overdue for a wash, or a blockage.
If you're confident that you've checked thoroughly for blockages, and both parts of the pre-filter have been washed, I would encourage you to contact us directly for further assistance. Our experts will talk you through some additional troubleshooting checks to help you pinpoint and resolve the cause of the issue.

Might need a new filter
Hi
Thanks for making contact and I'm sorry you're having difficulty.
I would suggest that this is a blockage of some kind as the pulsating is caused by a lack of airflow (the motor is protecting itself by pulsating and then ultimately cutting out).
I would recommend looking at the following video which will take you through a methodical way of checking this. The model in the video is a DC59 but applies to most cordless models: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdnu4yk-5vI
Furthermore, I would check the bin inlet to make sure that the one-way door/flap is not jammed as this also can cause the problem.
If you continue to have difficulty, please give the Dyson Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), 0800 298 0298 (UK). Our experts will be happy to talk you through some further diagnostic checks when you have your machine easily to hand.
Best wishes
Allan
