Although it does not specifically reference the Artisan, the procedures are the same as for the tili-head mixer shown.

Bad armature or stator
Control plate broken

This could be the pivot rod between the head and the column being loose and out of place. Or it could be the hook activated by the lock lever not engaging properly. See the following Service Manual:

The speed control guide is on the printed page 15 (green page number bottom of the page)
The guide states you also can select speeds 3, 5, 7, and 9 by moving the selector in between 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10
