try a cleaning cassette.. if it dont work it is the heads that are bad.. try a good one.. sometimes this happens if u use old mini dv tapes.. try new.. hope this helps ya

It sounds as though the hard drive is about to go south on you soon and the receiver is going to need to be replaced however, in the interim you can change the options of the recordings and make it a default so that the recording continues past the end of the show. It is possible that extending this time will allow you to view the portion you want before it skips to the end. In order to do this press the guide button and select a program in the future. On the create timer screen select the option icon. You will now be at the timer options screen you can extend the time the recording will last after the end of the show and when it will begin recording prior to the show. I would also set this as your systems default so that it performs the same way regardless of what you are recording. According to the latest known receiver issues this is not identified as it is a common indication that the hard drive has an error internally. If this works I suggest that you have a replacement sent to you so that you do not lose the use of your DVR un-expectantly.Remember to watch all recorded events prior to replacement as you will lose that info when the receiver is swapped. I looked into to this it is the ccd and Canon will fix it for free (shipping included), as stated below. I have copied what has helped me!
It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.
U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST).
