E17 means the machine has gone out balance. Normally, if you untangle the clothes and shut the lid, it will start again. If it doesn't, it may have damaged the out of balance lever under the top of the cabinet. It may also mean that the clutch has failed and the machine is only washing in 1 direction. This will tangle the clothes and cause it to go out of balance every load. Have a look under the machine, if there is black / brown oily stains all over the bottom of the cabinet, it is almost certain the clutch has failed. In most cases, its cheaper to buy a new machine.

More likely than not it is your control regulator gone out. This is where your rotary knob is.
