Does not crank the engine? Cycle starter safety interlocks...

  • Parking brake OFF then ON
  • Both steering arms IN, then OUT
  • PTO switch ON then OFF
Try to start.

Engine cranks but wont fire?
  • Check the fuel level in the tank is higher than the top of engine.
If still won't start, comment here so I may assist further if need be.

I failed to mention that the engine never even turned over. It didn't even click. I changed the solenoid but had the same result. I'm thinking it's the key switch? The battery was at 12 volts when I tried to start it but now it's at 10....so I need to charge it.

SOURCE: Toro 6.5 hp 9 year old mower. Starts Ok; surges

Sounds like your carburetor needs to be cleaned out. The surging is usually a sign of running to lean (not getting enough gas) because of possible water, rust, gum, varnish or trash in your carb. Hope that helps.....

SOURCE: Poulan riding mower starts and runs for a few

If you have already changed your fuel filter and spark plug, look at your fuel tank cap. The breathing holes may be clogged with dirt or debris preventing good fuel flow. I happened to spend $150 bucks for this $5 fix. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: The starter won't completely turn over even though

Sometimes on the Briggs and Kohler engines, the compression release fails to operate at the proper time or is malfunctioning. A remedy for this is to remove the valve cover(s) and adjust the OH valves per the manufacturers specifications. This enables much easier starting, produces less wear and tear on the starter and may allow your new battery to completely turn that engine over. Out of adjustment valves mimic a weak or failing battery quite well and the engine hangs up on the compression stroke because the compression release system is not working properly. Adjust those darn valves.

Why won't my toro 6.5 gts start after taking blade offand replaceing it?

From flipping the mower on it's side the top of the cylinder gets slightly flooded with crankcase oil. A good priming and a few extra pulls on the starter cord is usually necessary after this type of maintenance. You'll see a few extra puff of oil smoke upon starting. This burns off in less than a minute.

Toro manuals

If the belt has quite a few hours it may have stretched enough to cause it to slip. May have to replace it. I replaced mine and works fine now. As a short fix you can spray with a belt dressing and will work for a while if the slippage is not too bad. The can will specify for slipping belts.

Our Toro, guaranteed to start, won't start. We can cut awhile, then it will not restart. Plug is fine, getting a spark, and not at all wet, can't seem to find the problem. This doesn't...

I have the same problem. One time this happened and it restarted after a few hours and worked fine for 5 more cuts over a couple of months time. Now again it quit mid cut of my yard and would not restart. When trying to start it would fire for a few seconds and than shut off again. I wated a week to try it again and now it does nto fire at all. This is about a year old mower with only about 10-15 hours of total use.

Stopped abruptly won't restart

tThe flywheel is indexed to the crankshaft with a soft aluminum "shear" key, when the blade is stopped suddenly the key is broken instead of the crankshaft. The flywheel will need to be removed and a new key installed. Make sure to clean the shaft and flywheel mating surfaces so they fit tightly or the new key won't last too long.
