It could be a general hardware failure, maybe. How old is it? An easy assumption would be the filter capacitors on the power supply, but I would want to know more. If you take the rear lid off, look for larg-ish components that look like little batteries. They should be the larger ones, cylinder shaped, with scoring marks on the end. If they are bulged/leaking, they need to be replaced. Look up the uF number on the side and try to get something similair. If you can't get the exact value, alwayse go a little HIGHER in uF NOT LOWER. (Bang! Smoke! Flames!) Also be very careful that the voltage rating is high enough. To prevent this from happening agian try to source "low ESR" parts. These will have a lower seriese resistance and last a lot longer. They are a little more expensive.

I would suspect a problem in either the backlight assembly, or the power supply that drives it. If it's the power supply, the part may be over $100.
