Dv5, who's disk?, from HP; all disks from dell with dell labels.?
or home made?
back long ago, in the manual it told you to make recover disks, did you then? DAY1 act? and now they fail? or made them too late?
what are you installing.? DV5-zzzzz (what is the zzzz sub model numbers?)
this PC is 11 years old, and came with vista 32bit.
built 2008, 2 years before LED back lamps installed, not good !
so tell what disks you have there. (clearly please, ok?)
lets see if I can find this old PC manual, yes, at HP. it is there.
ok I see it, page 143 the book said to make recovery disks 11 years ago, day 1 new, if you waited until vista was infected with viruses, then those disks are junk, or made by others wrong or with wrong DVD-R media. (funny labels is proof)
why not just buy windows 7-32bit and install it fresh. using real disks.
you never told the true and full model number so I will guess that now just to show you the official HP page for this PC
DV5-1000 (and lots more)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-dv5-1000-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3744188/manuals
see service guide book, see that F11 HOT KEY is missing on your PC (partition recovery)
as that went byebye with the dead HDD.
see the rule there, on recovery disks (not sold at HP )
page 143(pdf)? day one make disks?
if the recovery discs are bad, then that means the DVD drive is bad or the recovery disks are bad.
how to know that , ? takes hard work or spare parts.
I'd just buy the W7 disks from MS and let it load.
now let me tell you about BLANK screens
this old PC has CCFL black lamps (LCD) page 154,same book.
that most now are long ago dead, or intermittent.
so sure the CCFL go dead mid install SURE.
if the CCFL even glow at all it is miraculous.
many died 5 years ago.
if the screen is dead, and power cycling it stays black the CCLF are suspects.
your manuals are all there.
your drivers for windows 7 32 bit are there, all is there for w7
and is fully supported by HP an MS, unlike VISTA or older.
There is a bios setting which needs to be switched in order for the system to not fail when installing a replacement HDD, if you have installed a HDD that is not the exact one previously installed, the computer bios will reject the reinstallation of your operating system via recovery disks. Alternately there could be a graphics driver issue which can also randomly occur. If you can go to the manufacturers website , locating the support page for the model of computer your perfroming this task on, you should be able find the instructions on what to do when replacing an non standard HDD. Good luck I hope everything works out for you.
Start over from the beginning, that's the only option to do this correctly! I know that's not the simplest thing but it's what must be done- Best of Luck, you got this!
the long old sad story,
the owner, made recovery disk long ago
(oops too late)
but not made when the PC was new. so the disks he made are no good, from corrupted OS.
then discovers and finds the home made disks are not good, today.
or were damaged, long ago by age, sun light
or scratched up, etc.
What we do now is to go Microsoft, and buy w7
buy and install it with the w7 drivers clearly seen at HP.com support page for you PC.
btw, HP does not sell these old w7 media install kits now, after 10 years.

SOURCE: Does the fj270 recovery disk from ebay make the computer like new with a blank harddrive?
Hi,
Normally yes. If the recovery disk is an original from Sony and/or an exact reproduction then it should reinstall Windows XP (which I believe is the original OS) complete with appropriate drivers and proprietary utilities/applications from Sony. Alternately, you can just pop in a Windows OEM installer CD and use the key printed on a sticker underneath the notebook. Thereafter an update or a visit to Sony website should enable you to download/install necessary drivers.
The notebook must of course be instructed to boot from the CD. This could be done by entering into your CMOS/BIOS and selecting the CD drive as the priority boot medium.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Just a note--any Universal retail OSX install disc will work. It's only a machine specific disc that won't unless it's for your model.
