Manitowoc QY1304A Ice Machine Compressor will not start

I am working on a Manitowoc QY1304A Ice Machine. It is 220v and the problem is the compressor will not start. I have checked the contactor and I have 220v on both sides. I did a resistance test on the PTCR and it is withhin tolerances. I checked at the compressor and I have 220v. The only thing I can think to do is replace the capacitor but I see no physical damage to it. It is not swollen or leaking. I tried testing it with a multi meter and the oms go up till they reach the top scale of the meter. If I short it it will charge again. I also checked the compressor for ground and found none. Check the compressor between the windings and they seem to add up fine. Please help, Joe

Does the compressor make any noise at all?

You can ohm out the compressor windings. I dont know off the top of my head which compressor manufacturer they are using but if it is Copeland you can get an electrical handbook and it will have ohm values for the compressor. If not assume the rule of thumb Common to Run is X, Common to Start is Y, Start to Run is X+Y, and Y should be 3 to 5 times whatever X is. On Rx10,000 scale check each terminal to ground should be open.

SOURCE: Manitowoc Icemaker Compressor Will Not Start

I'd think that the start capacitor is faulty and could be the problem.

Here's a parts list for the model you're working on that also contains several line drawings

Here's the online service manuals for the ice machines.

Just click on the link to expand the search and go down until you get to the "Q" series and select the "troubleshooting guide" and any other parts of the tech manual you need, it's all there including the technician's guide too.

Hope you found this info very helpful and best regards!

Manitowok gd0602a ice machine won't make ice... compressor starts, water pump starts but evaporator placate does not get cold ... condenser fan does not ever run

If your Manitowoc GD0602A ice machine is not producing ice and the compressor and water pump are starting, but the evaporator plate is not getting cold and the condenser fan is not running, it is possible that there may be a problem with the refrigeration system of the machine. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
  1. Check the refrigerant levels in the machine. If the levels are low, it may indicate a leak in the system.
  2. Check the evaporator and condenser coils for any visible signs of damage or blockages. Make sure that the coils are clean and unobstructed.
  3. Check the compressor and condenser fan motor for any signs of damage or malfunction.
  4. If the issue persists, it is possible that there may be a problem with the control board or another internal component of the machine. In this case, it will likely be necessary to have a qualified technician inspect the machine to diagnose the problem and recommend the necessary repairs.
I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can assist with.

My manitowoc series 420 has a code telling me the compressor discharge temperature

Which code is that? I don't see that in the service manual. There is an E09 that indicates that during the first six minutes of freeze the discharge temperature was below the average of the last 6 cycles. I have searched from E01 to E31 and don't see the code you indicate but I would say you either have a low refrigerant charge, a flooding TXV that is allowing too much refrigerant flow into the evaporator and not allowing enough flow to be diverted into harvest, or a weak compressor. Reset the unit and check the temperatures on the display while its running and time a freeze cycle. Should take about 15 minutes to make ice.

I have a Manitowoc QD0212A 120v. It makes ice, but after the bin gets full, it appears that the compressor does not run to cool the ice box. Is there some type of relay or solenoid that could be bad?

Try cleaning the radiator for the ice box compressor it could be tripping it's thermal overload switch, if that doesn't work check to see if the termostat setting is in the range for the compressor to turn on when the ice starts melting.
