Windows media will says not the right codec. I downloaded the updates and other audio player programs but to no avail.
Ok this is simple, out of the box vista only plays a small number of formatted sounds and videos.
what you do is simple install VLC.
end story. the French solved this problem long long ago.

and the truth is, had problems since day 1 new. a fact. for 12 years now.
it is that old.
Not one PC with windows ever support, all sound or video encoding formats, not one.
not only is this an issue
but your PC has CCFL lamps no nice LED black lamps and they will fail. most did now.
so, expect that next.
the street value is $20 working or 0 not.
best is to buy one 2010 and newer, 2011 for sure. 2010 is LED first year, and some still had CCFL then, on the smallest screens.

SOURCE: cannot play wma audio book on mp3
Audiobooks in WMA format have a restrictive DRM-license that does not allow their use on certain types of mp3 player. To use the WMA file that you already have, you will need to use an illegal DRM-stripper such as Tunebite - but, that's illegal.
You will have to stick to audiobooks that are in mp3 format - and even then, there are a few asterisks - you may not be able to resume where you left off without fast-forwarding. But at least you will be able to play the file.
SOURCE: no audio file will play on WMP, no dvd or audio disk will play...
Windows Media Player cannot play several files in the playlist. This might be caused by one or more problems.
To find information about the specific problems, click the Now Playing tab, and then click the blue or red icon next to each file in the List pane.
In some cases, you might encounter this error message if there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. For example:
SOURCE: Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec is not installed
IF YOU HAVE THE INTERNET SERVICE THE GO STEP BY STEP TO FIND THE CODEC ... THIS MAY ALSO HAPPEN IS YOU HAVE NOT INSTALLED THE SOUND DRIVER!! IF YOUR USING XP THE THIS CODEC PACK YOU HAVE TO INSTALL http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm IF YOUR USING VISTA THEN DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS..http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package.shtml

Try reinstalling your audio drivers, or use system restore to undo the update if yo are sure of that.
Reinstalling the proper drivers should generally fix it though.
In case you don't have them anymore, try the manufacturer's website or a driver finder program.
