My Kenwood 450 bread maker has stopped kneading the dough. I put it on and it makes a sound as if it is trying to turn the paddle but the paddle doesn't turn but it still continues to go through the programme so will cook the unmixed doing. Can this be fixed?

Probably a sticking gear. Worth bringing to a service shop.

SOURCE: Mixer stopped turning when I was making bread

You probably have stripped the gear in the head section. It can be replaced, but I would consider this a advanced repair since you need to push steel pins out of the shafts to replace the gears. Use google to find a local repair shop, or fix it yourself if your mechanically inclined, parts are available online (and not that expensive).

SOURCE: bread dough

Hi. There are several possibilities. First, you should always proof your yeast. Take a 1/3 cup of WARM water, add a half tsp.of sugar and yeast, wait 10 minutes. If your yeast becomes frothy its active and can be used. If not, get some fresh yeast. Second, use a flour that has a high protein content (10-12%) if you're not using pans to make your bread. High protein develops more gluten than low protein flour. Gluten development will give your dough body, and prevent your dough from flattening. Third, after mixing. knead the dough by hand for 8-10 min., cover and let rise until doubled, punch dough down and divide. Knead the portions by hand for 8-10 mins. Shape loaves and place on baking sheet or use pans, let it rise untill doubled, then bake as usual. Been there...Done that. Let me know how you make out. Ricardok45.

SOURCE: The paddle will not stay on the shaft while mixing dough.

Probably the paddle and shaft are worn. Both are replaceable. Buy a new Paddle and a Kneader mounting shaft unit (Part No. ADA 29A115)

Is there anything I can do?

I don't know about your specific model, but in most bread makers there is a removable paddle that goes in the bottom of the bread pan after you put that in the machine. The paddle usually has a flattened side on the hole which slides on to the post sticking up from the bottom of the machine. If you look at the post straight down from above it should be D shaped. The usual procedure is to put the pan in the machine, install the paddle, and then add your ingredients. Assuming you are doing this and it is still not working, trying running it through a mix only cycle (like for pizza dough) with the machine empty to see if the paddle is engaging and spinning properly. If it is not, contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Remove bread maker shaft

Not sure what you are asking but to remove the paddle you need to perhaps give it a slight twist and pull upwards. It musts be cleaned regularly to ensure it moves freely to mix the dough. If you haven't cleaned it for a while perhaps a short soak in cold water will loosen it.

Can't remove kneading blade

If you baked bread in it and cannot get the paddle free, put enough water in the pan to cover the paddle and let it set for 5 or 10 min to soak the bread crust that formed between the shaft and the paddle. Then take a hold of the shaft on bottom of pan with hand or pliers to hold it still and try to work the paddle clockwise with other hand until it becomes unwedged from shaft. Sometimes it gets wedged on shaft pretty tight due to the beating against dough ball and cooked bread holds it tightly wedged.

While the machine is kneading it makes an awful grinding sound. It sounds like the paddle is not moving. If you lift the dough up the paddle moves freely.

It sounds like your belt is slipping. All bread machine operate off of an electric motor and drive belt and they do wear out.

Can i use the kenwood chef with the dough hook for the second kneading in bread making

If you use the dough hook it will remove the air built up in the rising dough. The Kenwood should have a beater or paddle for that.
I prefer to use my hands and give the bread a good beating!

Why did the kneading paddle on my 1148X bread machine quit working. This happened the third time it was used. It did the initial mixing and resting. When it started the kneading process again, the blade...

Hi, If this is the third time using it, it could be defective. Return it for service. If not under warranty, try a few things. 1) Make sure the pan is inserted in the machine correctly. 2) Make sure that the paddle is not sticking, or the sealed bearing on the bottom of the bread pan is not broken or frozen. (Take pan out and see if you can turn the paddle freely by hand). Or finally, the belt may be loose and slipping, especially when it takes more power to knead the dough the second time. Good luck...Hank
