Left hand copper cannister - thermal cutout switch tripped (for no apparent reason) and lost second stage of heating. reset thermal cutout switch - water is now hot - but the light is not on when hot water is flowing. cutout did not trip again (Yet?) I will check the light bulb. Question: How to check for a short that is causing overheat of circuit?

The easiest thing to do would be to call Bosch and just ask for a new heater for free. The other option is to call Bosch and have them send you all new elements. If there is power, there should be heat of some kind.

If you smell it - look fer it. It may be a bad connection on the AC supply line all the way back to the service panel or inside the heater connection panel. Bad connections cause high heat and discoloration of wires or connectors and a serious voltage drop to the appliance.

The whole idea of tankless saving money is a load of sales-BS that defies physics and common sense.
There are no service manuals... except bosch website has troubleshoot section in product manual.
Call a bosch-qualified service tech.
Go to Lowes and buy ordinary tank heater, and fix your heater today for only $250.
Tank-type electric water heater can be easily repaired and maintained by homeowner to last forever... that is a fact
