Aron,
To perform a reset you will need to disconnect the TV completely from power for at least 30 seconds, if this doesn't resolve your problem then you may have hardware that has expired in your device. Without physically looking at your device I can't say with certainty what your problem is, it could be your PCB. There are video's online you can visit on how to test a PCB for faults.
If you are not comfortable troubleshooting your device I would suggest contacting a local electronic repair shop near you, however I will link you to a generic instructional video showing you how to perform basic troubleshooting of your device.
Hope this helps,
Best regards

Hi there,
I've been looking into this myself as I've also recently purchased the KDL-40W4000. I was watching a murky old film and was getting a bit of sludgy ghosting but found that by reducing the contrast to 25, setting the backlight on low, colour on neutral and the brightness about 40-60 (and taking ALL advanced noise functions off), this reduced the ghosting considerably.
BUT, this is quite a cool and dark image. If you watch standard TV and films mainly, a variation of the Cinema setting is probably the best overall setting i.e.
backlight: min
contrast: 79
brightness: 50
colour: 53
colour temp: Warm 2 (although Warm 1 is less yellow and still fine)
sharpness: min
noise reduction: off
mpeg nr: off
contrast enhancer: off
colour space: standard

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).

I also have the same problem and was wondering if you ever found out the answer to this problem Peter?

That symptom may cause by the main board or t-con board, I suggest you do software up grade first.
