Hi,
I would remove the tray from the machine and all paper from that tray. Then turn it over and make sure and make sure that the paper slides are working correctly. The machine doesn't actually detect the paper just the fact that you have the paper slides up against it. So after you have put the tray back in the machine make sure the paper slides are firm up against the paper and it should be fine.
Also, while the tray is out of the machine make sure there is nothing in behind the tray blocking the sensors.
Good luck!
SOURCE: hi my printer doesn't pull
My HP OfficeJet 7310 behaved correctly on the automatice paper feed for a long time and then began to be unable to pick up the page or would grab 2 or 3 pages at once. I was about to spend the $$$ to replace it, maybe $400 at that time. Instead I watched it work again and angin or not work. Noice the 1 inch square piece of cork? I went to Hobby Lobby and for less than $2 bought a roll of very thin cork. I cut an inch square and replaced the one on the machine and it has worked perfectly since. I still have 99% of the cork roll. What it?

There are two possible solutions: The first is that the lugs on the side of the paper tray are broken, and the printer cannot "see" a paper tray. In this case you need a new paper tray. The other possibility is that the tray and paper size sensor inside the printer is faulty. Often just pushing the contacts can free them, and sometimes the metal prongs that sense the lugs on the side of the paper tray get unseated. Just use your finger to reseat them correctly. If that doesn't work, the sensor board is likely to have failed, and will need replacing

you can choose mp first in "paper handing" printer menu or print tray1 is A4 default in properties of printer software.

some sensor is most likely damaged. if there is no small piece of paper lodged in somewhere which is causing it to think it is open, or no visible piece which is bent and can be fixed, chances are the only option is to replace the printer. happened to me also, I somehow managed to get it to work once by shaking it a great deal, but it happened again and remained that way.
These defects normally occur when printing is attempted on unsupported media or when the printer is set up for a different type of media than the media that is actually loaded into the machine.
Check your media and ensure that it is suitable for use in the printer. Refer to the printer's user manual for information on supported media types and weights. Is the media you are printing on supported in the printer?
Ensure that the paper type is set accurately on the printer operator panel (go to Menu/Paper Menu/Size-Type/Tray1/Type). Is the paper type set correctly on the printer operator panel?
Change the paper weight setting to heavy on the printer operator panel (go to Menu/Paper Menu/Size-Type/Tray1/Type/Heavy Paper/Check button). Try printing your document again. Did the error return? If the error returns, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for further assistance.
