Check the image size you are saving - the camera can save in range of sizes - higher the better for quality. Also check JPEG is set to "fine" rather than "Standard" quality.

Your post is confusing, are you saying that photos which were once properly exposed are now black, i.e. underexposed, or have they disappeared completely?? Neither is believable. It is to be the camera, unless the problem is that the camera can no longer read the card.I am afraid your information is not clear enough Take the card out and check what is on it in your computer or someone else's if you don't have one. Try a different card (preferrably a different make) in the camera, just take some random shots and see what happens. Please report back.

What are the best settings for the Leica D-lux 3, for clear photos in general?

The best settings depend on what you're taking a picture of, and what you want that picture to say to the viewer. That's why the camera gives you all those choices instead of just a single "BEST" setting.

You don't want to use the same settings for a landscape photo as for a portrait. Even for a portrait, you might want different settings for one of an old man than one of his granddaughter. Your local library probably will have some books on introductory photography, explaining what the various settings do and how they affect your photos.

Transferring photos from my leica v lux 1 camera to my mac

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.
