Craftsman Yard Tractor with a 26 HP Engine laid on its side drive belt work. some gas leaked on floor. Turned upright. Engine turns over but not firing, and will not start? What do I do?

While turned over some gas (1 Pint?) leaked on floor. On its side for around 30 minutes. Let sit upright for 24 hours before trying to start due to gas. The crank is turning, but there appears to be no "spark" in the turning sequence as engine does not try to start.

Could be fuel pump vapor locked. If gas level in tank is below the fuel pump, fill tank or add enough to get level in tank higher than top of engine.

Else, fundamentals... fuel, comperssion, spark.

There is a good chance that you fuel fouled the spark plug. I would start by making certain that you still have fire at the plug and replace the spark plug.

Testimonial: "The fuel apparently had fouled the sparkplug. Starting fluid got it started, then it seemed to run fine. Thank you."

Check the fuel pressure. A slight dip in pressure will keep the engine from starting. When is the last time you did a tune up? Even if you are getting some spark you might not have enough. New plugs, wires, distr. cap could solve this problem. Or try a new fuel filter. When diagnosing a car problem always do simple cheap things first, as this usually ends up being the cause.

SOURCE: broken timing belt. engine turns over and put a wrench on cam shafts and they turn over pretty good

have someone perform a leak down test on each cylinder. This will tell you if you possibly bent a valve on any of the cylinders. If you did you need to remove the cyl. head to have it looked at. If the leak down test is good on all cylinders you should be good with just replacing the timing belt and tensioner. The likely hood that you didn't bend a valve is slim since that motor is an interference motor.

Check the ECM for Codes to help you find out what's causing  the problem. Here is a simple and easy way to check.
On board diagnostic (OBD) was designed on vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection so you can generally retrieve the codes yourself. No need buying a scanner or running to any parts stores to check the Check Engine. This system is called obd1 and applies to most vehicles made before 1995 for domestics and 1993 on imports. In this article, I will discuss the methods used by domestic vehicle manufacturers on how to check the engine lights in their cars and Trucks.

For GM domestic vehicles made before 1995, the diagnostic connector is located under the dash panel by the driver side. To get the check Engine codes to flash in your dash panel, use a jumper wire or a paper clip and connect terminals A and B of the diagnostic connector. Turn your ignition key on with engine off and the codes should start to blink. All codes should start with code 12 which is one long flash followed by 2 short flashes. This code 12 means the diagnostic system is normal and will repeat itself continuously if there are no trouble codes. Otherwise, code 12 will flash 3 times before flashing the fault codes.

Counting the codes being flashed is easiest way to trouble shot problems in domestic vehicles and most of the codes can be erased or cleared by disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 1 minute and reconnect. Just make sure to check your service manual in case you have electronic equipment such as radio or clock that needs reprogramming in which battery disconnection is not recommended. Finally after performing repairs on the culprit code, always go for a road test to confirm if the problem is fixed.

Good luck and hope this helps

Engine will not engage into drive

The first thing to check for is that the drive belt is not broken. Sometimes they'll snap, but stay attached hanging to the flywheels, so you won't see them in the yard. Of course, if this model is shaft-drive, disregard the above advice. That's about all I can tell you, but my guess is a broken drive belt. If the drive belt's OK, I have no idea what your problem is.

Engine turns over but will not start as if it is not getting gas. I checked hose going to carb. And it had gas in. I pulled a spark plug out and did not see it spark when I turned to engine over. 26 hp V...

Well you're on the right track. Check both spark plugs though. You may have spark on one and not the other.Depending on how old of a tractor, you have either points or electronic ignition. If old check the points if no spark, if newer, the magneto could have failed. If one plug works, but not the other try switching mags, then you'll know for sure it was bad. If you find you have spark, and you don't think you're getting fuel, try a shot of starting fluid in the carb. If it hits on that, then you know you have a fuel problem. You cannot leave today's gasoline in a mower without adding an additive like sta-bil.
