Defrost cycles typically every 8-12 hours. Lights will operate during cycle but compressor and fans will not. The cycle usually lasts less than an hour.

SOURCE: Kenmore / GE side by side defrost drain keeps freezing up

Check under the base, the tube must be clear to the water tray, often there is a rubber flow restrictor, this either perishes or blockes, either way remove it, defrost over night and then turn back on, should then work ok within 24hrs. Regards Adbvisor

SOURCE: GE side by side refrigerator defrost problem

CHECK THE DEFROST HEATER FOR CONTINUITY. IF IT IS O.K. CHECK THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL FOR A FAULTY SOLDER CONNECTION ON THE DEFROST RELAY. THE ELECTRONIC BOARD SHOULD BE LOCATED ON THE BACK WALL OF THE REFIGERATOR BEHIND AN ACCESS PANEL.

SOURCE: Defroster cycle stuck

Unfortunately GE has been having a problem with the main mother boards on your model refer, the mother board controls the defrost cycle and there is not reset for it, you may have a bad board.

SOURCE: Long run time between defrost cycles

You have a broken defrost part. Either the heater, t-stat or timer. The longer you let it go without repairing it, the more parts is take out.

My GE profile side by side frig goes into defrost mode more often, every 1-2 days. Temps go up to 46 degrees for frig and 8 degrees for freezer. It doesn't take too long before it cools back down. Is...

. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

Where is the defrost timer located on ge side bty side model gss25jfmdww

Hi, This model has a mother board instead of a defrost timer. If you are having a defrost issue, the first part you want to test is the defrost heaters. If you need instruction on testing the defrost cycle, please let me know so I can assist you further.

Thanks

The defrost heater must be replaced when the defrost T-stat is replaced.
The main control board located on the rear of the fridge controls defrost sequence.

Ice forming on rear of freezer wall

The best way to determine what has caused a non defrosting GE electronic control model is to first access the control board. Jump terminals line power to defrost, (J4 and J9). An amp probe should be placed on this jumper wire to determine current draw of the defrost circuit. A three amp draw is what is normal for this circuit. This will eliminate checking behind the evaporator cover to determine a defective heater or over temp device (defrost terminator). Note: This test is only to check the defrost circuit. It does not initiate a defrost cycle. If the unit is in any other cycle than defrost, that cycle will continue to operate as well.

GE Side by side runs constantly.

The timer that controls the defrost cycle/function, may have failed and there may be no defrosting occurring. If icing of the coils due to the missing defrost cycle, there may not be enugh circulation left to keep the thermostat happy.

Try defrosting it manually (I know, it's a pain - aren't we spoiled?) and see if the compressor then cycles for a few days before it starts running continuously again.

And for Dr. Fred, the above suggestion about trying manually defrosting applies to your problem too.
The exposure to overnight moisture (ice accumulation) may have interfered with the automatic cycle.

G.E. refrigerator

I do not suggest attempting this! If you think you have a defrost problem you need to test other thermostat and heating elements FIRST! But, I will tell you from experience that 90% of the time it is the computer board that needs replaceing.... Only if your having a defrost problem..IE., ice build up on evap coils. Replace the board and defrost all the ice with a hairdryer. And since you have the back wall off in the freezer you might as well replace the thermostat.

Goodluck,

Brian

If you still REALLY just have to know how to put refrigerator in defrost cycle just let me know.
