I’m trying to playback some 8mm videos from my Canon E61 camcorder. I connect the audio/video terminal from the camera to the tv and I get nothing. The viewfinder on the camera only shows one vertical white line, no date or anything else. Any ideas? If the problem is the connection to the tv and not the camcorder itself, how do I export the videos to dvd?

You need special software or converter unit to copy to a DVD. As for your TV, remember that your TV is probably digital and you may need to change a setting to accept analog which your camera outputs.

I thought that using the audio/video RCA connection was analog.

  • barrybam Mar 04, 2019

There may be a settings input selector on your TV to direct the input to analog. As for going to record on DVD you will need special software and a converting dongle.

Ok. Thanks. I'm mostly concerned with the fact that I can only see a vertical line in the viewfinder and wonder if that will affect the playback.

Possible that the camcorder tape heads need cleaning or are scratched. Use a cotton swap with some alcohol and gently try cleaning them. The heads are what the tape slides across when playing or recording. If they are dirty or damaged then you will get the same effect when transferring.

but the problem sounds to be that the playback on the LCD is fine while the TV playback is problematic. I am currently having a similar problem using the three to three connection to the TV: audio is fine picture is completely distorted. I tried to adjust NTSC playback mode and changed it to NTSC and not to PAL TV, but nothing changed. Can you only use S-video lines with these cameras? sony dcr

SOURCE: unable to export video from camcorder to PC

Get a 4-pin Firewire cable. Plugs in just below power plug slot. What plug you need on the other end depends on your computer. You can get Firewires in 4 to 4 pin; 4 to 6 pin, and 4 pin to USB. My laptop is configured to take a 4 or 6 pin Firewire but my desktop only has USB. I transfered using 4 to 4 pin and it worked great. No drivers, no discs needed...at least with Vista. As soon as I plugged in the camera, I was asked to whether I wanted to transfer from biginning of tape or at currenty location. I chose from the beginning and the camera automatically rewound and strated to transfer to the PC. I don't know if it would work same way with 4-wire Firewire to USB but assume it would. Cables around $35 but I purchased at Circuit City for the going out of business discount. I also bought some SD cards so I can take snapshots and transfer them too for print.

Get a firewire and you should be fine.

I have a Ge camcorder 8mm model Cg814. When powered on and placed in the edit/playback mode for reviewing, I can hear the sound, but there is no picture in the viewfinder. There is also no picture on the...

It sounds like it could be: (1) Video track on the tape might be messed up. Or (2) The heads on the camera may be dirty. Or, (3) It may be dirty battery connection. (Most likely, it's dirty heads.)

Solutions: (1) Try playback with a different tape that you know is good. Still nothing?? (2) Run a head cleaner specific to your camera, for about 20 seconds. Remove head cleaner and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Put tape back in and try playback again. This will probably solve it.

Another thing to try.. (3) Turn camera OFF. Remove the battery, wipe off the connectors on both the battery and the camera with a clean cloth. Return battery to the camera.Try playback again.

If these steps don't solve the playback problem, you will probably need a camera repair person.

No image on TV or in viewfinder when I playback the tape in 4yr old Canon ZR100 video camera

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

I have a really old Canovision8, E40, 8mm camcorder that doesn't work anymore. What's the best solution to convert the tapes to DVD or to the computer?

Hi,
You need Hi-8 camcorder/ Hi-8 player to playback your old Video-8 tapes, hook that camcorder/ player with DVD Recorder, play video-8 tapes and burn DVDs directly.

Jumpy Playback Through TV

First you should try a couple other tapes to make sure they all do it. It could be tape damage on the tape you are using. If you remove the tape from the unit and look at the part which gets inserted first you will see a small latch on the front side of the door. If you depress the latch you can open the cover over the tape. Be very careful and don't touch the tape! Look at the tape for damage. If it is perfectly smooth, like a mirror, it is OK and the camcorder has a problem. If the tape is OK you probably have a tape path problem or the unit could be dirty. Cleaning the heads would be the easiest solution to try but if you are not familiar with the process you could do more damage than good. If you know how to properly clean the heads, certainly do that first. If that does not solve your problem either a tape guide is not adjusted properly or the tape is not loading fully or properly in the tape path. Either way it isn't going to work until it is repaired. I'm guessing that repair would be beyond your skills. You stated that you bought it off Ebay. You should contact the person you purchased it from no matter what is wrong with it because if they presented it as a working unit they were less than truthful. Good luck.
