21 hours? Isn't it still under warranty? Good luck !
Back firing could be an ignition, or valve timing issue, also check the function of the anti fire solenoid on the bottom of the carb float bowl ( you should hear this click as the ignition is switched on) you can also remove it and watch the centre pin retract when the ignition unit is switched on, next thing to check is that the flywheel key has not sheared, this will involve removing the flywheel, failing this remove the rocker box cover and make sure both valves are moving freely as the engine cranks, it could be a stuck valve.

On most riding mowers there are several switches that must be actuated before it will start. First, make sure that blades are disengaged. Also, if there is a handle that engages and disengages the blades, you might try holding it in the dis-engage position in case the switch is out of adjustment. There is probably one under the seat also. This switch kills everything if you are not sitting in the seat for safety reasons. The switch here could be out of adjustment or mis-positioned. Also, make sure the parking brake is set, and the gear is in neutral, and not forward or reverse. Also, even if the parking brake is set, you might try pressing the brake all the way down while starting, as this switch might be out of adjustment. All of the switches should be easy to locate and adjust. Also, you should check the battery. It is possible that you left the key on by mistake and drained it.
Hope some of this helps.

SOURCE: Backfire Tecumseh Generator
To maybe convert your Flamethrower back to a generator, Make sure the fuel line is a good quality thick rubber material (like OEM )since it passes through the engine,HEAT is a issue, if it has been modified to steel, or it's thin rubber, it will overheat the fuel on its way to the carb and cause backfires after the engine warms up , ( vaporizing gas and pressure bypassing the jets flooding the engine) I use 1/4 inch Goodyear sold at Autozone , one of very few name brand quality parts you can get there. The other possible cause is carbon deposits built up on the leading edge of the valve not allowing the valve to close all the way, just clean the valve, it is caused by too lean or rich carb setting or clogged jets, if it is a newer style carb with a pink main jet then debris in this area will always cause backfire, check and make sure the old tiny O-ring on this jet is not still in the bottom of the shaft, people forget to pull them out all the time or give up trying to pull them out, I use a paper clip and bend the end 1/8 of a inch @ 90 degrees to fish hook it out of there, CLEAN THE SHAFT with carb cleaner and a Q-tip.... A Tecumseh engine will always backfire if the carb or airflow is not perfect and sealed tight !!!!!! it looks simple to rebuild the carb but you must take your time and look close, clean it very well, make sure the jet is SEATED properly and all tiny holes are clean, use guitar string not torch head cleaners as they will enlarge the holes and make your carb run rich.
SOURCE: Mower will not start. Makes a loud fast clicking noise when the key is turned.
Loud ticking usually indicates near dead battery, take it out and charge it. If it still ticks you may need to replace it as they are only good for a few years.

If you have spark and compression, the only thing left is fuel.
Check that fuel is being deluvered to the carb (remove fuel line to carb and make provision to catch ejected fuel. Crank engine. Fuel should be pumped from the tank and out the open line at a good rate.
If this checks out (or there is no pump fitted, but there is fuel issuing from the pipe), check the electrical connector on the bottom of the carb. There should be battery voltage on this conection for the engine to run - if not - that's the problem.
If that checks out, the cut-off solenoid (fed by the connection you just checked) is suspect.

Did you come up with a fix for this problem? Mine has the same issue.
