Install a 75 micron fuel filter into the fuel line coming from tank. Make sure fuel line to carb (from on/off valve ) is not obstructed. There should be a steady continuous stream.

Loosen or remove fuel cap (as a test) to see if that helps. If runs ok without fuel cap, replace fuel cap,

If fuel cap doesn't help, turn off fuel and remove fuel bowl, turn on fuel. Again there should be a steady flow of fuel. If not, remove float and inlet needle and clear obstruction. Reinstall needle, float and fuel bowl. If still wont run properly, order a chinese replacement carburetor ($15 US delivered) and replace carb. Then drain fuel from tank and fuel bowl end of every season.

Look for an air pocket below the filter screen at the bottom of the fuel tank. Use a flashlight. If there is an air pocket there, that is the problem.

I agree with Rock. LOL...did same with a Honda motor on a generator. Still had problems probably with old fuel but eventually cleared up with new fuel. I would consider draining tank at end of season, running carb dry and putting straight no ethanol fuel with stabile fuel stabilizer in tank. Use the 360 version with a metal tank to minimize rust where fuel doesn’t contact tank.

Hi guys , thank U both so much for yr time and info. I've done all that U mentioned. Just before I go for a new carb , could it possibly b a faulty stop switch at all

  • Sloop Johnb Feb 25, 2019

Unlikely if it runs at all. It’s fuel.

SOURCE: Hello, Ihave a Honda HRU214 motor

I think you may have to connect the governor (wind driven flag connected to the carb that pulls speed down when rotation gets too high, but I don't know without seeing it.

I have a similar Honda (with the overhead valves) that someone gave me because it didn't run at all. Turns out it had a stuck open exhaust valve. I got it unstuck and changed the oil. After running it about an hour, the valve stuck again. I think this is an inherent problem with these engines. I cleaned up the valves really well and lubricated them. Then I put a high quality synthetic (actually motorcycle racing) oil in it and have been running it for a year now with no problems. Not sure what your issue is, but with stuff blowing out of the exhaust and loss of power, I'd pull the valve cover off (prop up the front of the mower and you can do this without losing any oil). Check your valves and give them a good cleaning. They may not be seating properly, which would cause the symptoms you describe. I'm just an amateur, but I'm learning every day! Hope this helps and best of luck to you Lou.

SOURCE: Honda mower HRU173PU carby screws adjustment

Hi Paul
Before you remove or try to adjust your low and high speed jets you should always count the number of turns it takes to lightly seat the idle mixture screw and high speed needle adjusting screws.
Be sure to write the number of turns down on a piece of paper so you will know how many turns from the seated position to open the jets when you go to reinstall them, or if you remove them for cleaning or replacement.
If you have aready tried to adjust them then the adjustments below should get it running for you for final adjustment when warm.
Normally you will adjust your idle jet to 1/2-3/4 turn open from the bottom seated position.
Then you will re-adjust the low speed of the engine when the engine is warm by turning the idle screw in or out till the engine runs smoothly at idle speed, around 1200 RPM.
The high speed jet is adjusted to 1 1/2- 1 3/4 open from the bottom seated position, after the engine is warm.
Then re-adjusted by turning the High Speed jet adjustment screw in or out till the motor runs smoothly at high speed.
Alway use the "lightly seated" method if you have not changed the screw settings.
Please take time to rate me

Flush gas tank, add fresh gas with Stabil. Use clean air cleaner. Remove clean/replace plug. Take bread wrapper, clean plastic off 2 inches, use to clean port from bottom of carb up thru carb after removing float and needle valve. Reassemble.

How do I ge ta repair manual for Honda HRU19 mower? The mower has no power when hot and will not start. If I had my choice again ...wouldn't purchase mower with automatic choke. Thanks

Your wanting the engine repair manual instead of one for the whole mower. The owners indicates that it has a GCV160A0.

You can download a shop manual from the following
Shop manuals Honda Engines

but if your wanting a full service manual then you need to order from Honda. The site can direct you to one online sites.

Why won't my mower just run already?

Hi, most likely the carby has dirt in it again(if this is what the shop have been cleaning each time). If it comes good when cold the valves need adjusting. Regards Phil.

Mixture adjustment honda hru 173

Hi this most honda engines dont have a mixture adjustment screw they only have a air bleed adjusment on the front of the carby close to the head though you can only move it a bit either way on some others should be about 2 turns out from closed, the main problem that honda engines have is they will still run with water in the carby , I would try cleaning out the carby bowl first its only held on with a bolt in the centre.
